Chelsea lose FA Cup final to Leicester City

Thomas Tuchel missed his first title in England with Chelsea and lost the final of the traditional FA Cup against Leicester City.

In front of more than 20,000 spectators at London's Wembley Stadium, the team of the German soccer coach lost 1-0 (0-0) to the Foxes trained by Brendan Rodgers on Saturday. Leicester fans and players were moved to tears after the club's first cup triumph.

Youri Tielemans Leicester City brought victory with a fantastic long-range shot from 25 meters in the 63rd minute. The eight-time cup winners Chelsea, with the German national players Timo Werner and Antonio RĂ¼diger in the starting line-up, dominated the game for a long time, but struggled against the compact Leicester defense. Also four substitutions - among others Kai Havertz came in the 75th minute - did not bring the desired goal. "That haunts us a bit through the season"said Tuchel, "a lack of composure and precision."

Chelsea with bad luck

In the closing stages, however, the Londoners were also very unlucky. First Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel prevented Mason Mount from equalizing with a strong save. Then a hit by Chelsea's Ben Chilwell was denied by the video referee because the ex-Leicester professional was said to have been offside when accepting the ball - a millimeter decision.

Leicester commemorated the success of its former owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha. The Thai patron died in a helicopter crash next to the stadium in 2018 after a home game. Srivaddhanaprabha had bought Leicester City in 2010 and led it from the second division to the English championship in 2016.

Prince William presents the trophy in front of several thousand fans

"I've dreamed about it since I was a kid", raved goalkeeper and captain Schmeichel at the BBC. The trophy was presented to him by FA President Prince William to the cheers of several thousand Leicester fans. As part of a test program for the return of spectators at cultural and sporting events, over 20,000 people were allowed into Wembley Stadium, which offers up to 90,000 seats.

Tuchel has no time to mourn with Chelsea. On May 29, his team will play the Champions League final against Manchester City in Porto. On Tuesday, Chelsea had the opportunity to take revenge against the cup winners in the Premier League. "Now it's about coming back and showing the right mentality on Tuesday"said Tuchel. "We missed a trophy and we're sad about it. But now we're facing another competition."

On the penultimate Premier League matchday, Stamford Bridge will be about to qualify for the Champions League. Leicester is third in the league, two points ahead of fourth Chelsea. Liverpool FC also still has hope as fifth in the table.
