Which material is best?

There are many materials - cotton, linen and synthetic materials.

For travel towels, however, have come a long way Microfiber enforced because it has an incredible number of advantages. But there are also some disadvantages.

a) Microfiber towel

Microfibers are ultra-fine synthetic fibers with a diameter between 3 and 10 micrometers. you are super light in weight and let yourself fold up compactly. Microfiber cloths fit into even the smallest corners of your backpack.

Microfiber towels feel great soft on and are at the same time durable and robust. you are breathable, absorbent and thanks to their thin fibers, they dry super fast once they are wet.

In tropical countries like Indonesia where a high humidity that is a great advantage.

In contrast to terry towels, the microfiber towels do not start to smell unpleasant as quickly.

There is also a microfiber towel antibacterial and if it has to be wash out easily.

Microfibers do not fluff and, due to their structure, it is difficult for dirt to get stuck in them. The same goes for grains of sand, whatever the microfiber towel is about the perfect beach towels makes.

Advantages of a microfiber towel at a glance

  • light
  • soft
  • hard-wearing and robust
  • absorbent
  • fast drying
  • odorless
  • antibacterial
  • easy to care for
  • practical and compact
  • do not fluff

With all the advantages, is there a disadvantage at all?

Unfortunately, microfiber towels feel a little bit on the skin compared to traditional towels takes getting used to at. They don't slide over the skin as easily, so drying them off is sometimes more like dabbing.

In addition, the Manufacturing of microfibers unfortunately not entirely unproblematic and not particularly sustainable. The basic material for the synthetic fibers is oilunbelievable for its dismantling much energy is needed. That also works out Recycle these materials quite difficult.

If you wash the towels, you get Microplastics in our wastewater, which for the most part cannot be filtered out in sewage treatment plants. A large proportion of the microplastics ultimately ends up in the ocean.

In terms of environmental friendliness, there is still room for improvement. Are an environmentally friendly alternative Bamboo fiber travel towels (see below).

Tip for washing your microfiber towel:

If you want to wash your microfiber towel, you should try one if possible low temperature as well as one short washing process set and on Do without fabric softener. The lower the temperature and the shorter the washing program, the less microplastics should be flushed out. You can also think about purchasing a wash bag from Guppyfriend. The bag is intended to prevent microplastics from getting into the environment when washing synthetic fiber towels (including microfiber towels).

Our recommendation for microfiber towels

Our clear recommendation for microfiber towels are the travel towels from Bahidora. They are comfortable on the skin and feel softer than other microfiber towels.

In addition, thought has been given to the hanging loop with a push button. This is namely attached to the long side of the towel. This means that even large towels can be hung up easily without their corners lying on the floor!

b) Travel towels made from bamboo fibers

Bamboo fibers are an alternative to microfiber. Many may primarily think of long, hard bamboo canes rather than soft textiles. However, this is not the case.

Because bamboo fibers have incredible advantages. Their round, smooth surface makes them compared to other materials softer, gentler and still more absorbent than microfibers.

At the same time they are robust and easy to care for. you are light in weight, skin-friendly and the same compact like other microfiber cloths. So they have all the advantages that microfiber towels have - and even more.

Bamboo is far in the making more sustainable and more environmentally friendly as microfiber.

Because bamboo is a grass and grows super fast - under ideal conditions up to 1.6 meters per day.

Bamboo stalks have reached their final height after about 45 days and can be harvested for the first time after 3-5 years. Bamboo also consumes little water and comes without fertilizers or pesticides out.

The great thing is that cultivation is a closed loop. Only the woody trunks are removed during harvest. The rhizomes remain in the ground. you prevent soil erosion and grow back directly as new bamboo trees.

Plus, bamboo is naturally occurring antibacterial and anti-microbial and already counteracts the formation of nuclei as a material.

Benefits of a bamboo towel at a glance

  • light
  • soft
  • hard-wearing and robust
  • more absorbent than microfiber
  • fast drying
  • odorless
  • antibacterial
  • easy to care for
  • practical and compact
  • do not fluff
  • more environmentally friendly in production

Disadvantages of bamboo travel towels

The only downside is that there are no towels available 100% bamboo fibers otherwise they would lose their shape very quickly after washing.

A Mixture of bamboo and microfiber is, however, a first step towards sustainability.

With other compositions with a higher bamboo content, holes would appear after a short time.

In addition to the material and the production, sustainability also means that Reusability and durability of a product.

Another disadvantage is that the bamboo towels often a bit expensive than "normal" microfiber towels. However, we are talking about only a few euros difference.

Our recommendation for bamboo towels

We use Pandoo bamboo towels (also available in our own Pandoo shop). You insist 40 percent made of bamboo activated carbon fiber and to 60 percent nylon.

The travel towels feel super soft and are extremely absorbent. They are a little thinner than pure microfiber cloths. This makes it easier to turn them into a sarong or scarf. So perfect for travel and outdoor activities!

Pandoo's travel towels are made in China. This is because the Moso bamboo especially in China and Southeast Asia is growing and the know-how is available there. Bamboo, which comes from China and has long transport routes, is correspondingly high Emissions. Pandoo compensates for this with the Support of various climate protection projects in China and Brazil.

c) Sustainable alternatives to travel towels

As you have surely noticed, the commercial travel towels are not particularly sustainable. The bamboo version also has a large proportion of nylon. That is why we would like to introduce you to sustainable alternatives to travel towels in the following.

We're a big fan of Hammam towels, as they are often made of cotton and are still very light. The Bersuse brand is Oeko-TEX certified. The hammam towels absorb well and are gentle on the skin. With a weight of 286 grams the cloth is still pleasantly light and also suitable for a trip. It is also made in Turkey. Most of the commercially available travel towels are made in China.

In addition to hammam towels are also suitable Muslin diapers as an alternative to travel towels. The market for baby products is much more sustainable than the outdoor sector. Gauze bandages dry faster than hammam towels and are lighter in weight. The properties with which gauze bandages are advertised are also extremely interesting for us travelers: highly absorbent, soft and quick-drying. The Grünspecht brand produces gauze bandages made from 100% organic cotton. At 70 x 70 cm, however, the muslin diapers are smaller than standard travel towels.

Of course, correct ones are allowed Sarongs not missing in this section. They are a wonderful alternative to traditional travel towels because they are light and dry quickly in the sun. You can find beautiful and fairly produced sarongs at mySarong, for example. The sarongs are made in Java in Indonesia in one small family business produced. The team behind the shop knows the local Indonesian family personally. In addition, they donate a small part of the sales to a nature conservation project through a foundation known to them. The best thing to do is to get a sarong in the Size Lif you want to use it as a beach towel as well.

Wash travel towel

Most travel towels are made of synthetic fabric. When washing it comes to so-called Fiber breaks. This leads to the fact that microfibers become detached from the fabrics and become Microplastics get into the environment.

If you want to wash your travel towels, you should do one if possible low temperature, one short washing process set and do without fabric softener.

The lower the temperature and the shorter the washing program, the less microplastics should be flushed out.

The washing bag from Guppyfriend is designed to prevent microplastics from entering the environment when washing synthetic fiber towels. The washing bag is intended to protect the textiles from fiber breakage and thus extend the service life of the travel towels.

The good thing about quick-drying travel towels: Since they stay “smell-free” for so long, you can wash them less often than standard towels.

The lower the temperature and the shorter the washing program, the less microplastics should be flushed out of synthetic fabric travel towels.

Less is more

No matter which material you choose, once you have a travel towel in your luggage, you won't be giving it away anytime soon. It is not only the ideal companion for on the go, but also super practical for every situation at home.

As towels are provided in most hotels, think minimalist and don't take more than two travel towels with you.
