What causes liver failure in dogs


  1. Fat metabolism:

The liver removes fats from the blood, which can also be stored in the hepatocytes.

When the body needs energy, these fat deposits are converted into energy.

  1. Sugar metabolism:

With the help of the hormone insulin produced in the pancreas, sugar molecules can be stored in the liver in the form of glycogen. If the body consumes more energy, the glycogen reserves can be converted into sugar.

A disorder of the sugar metabolism causes the following diseases:

  1. Protein metabolism:

Due to the fact that the liver cannot store excess amino acids (building blocks for proteins), it converts them into ammonia (NH3). This creates amino groups (NH2), which can be converted into carbohydrates and then into glycogen. However, since the remaining ammonia is poisonous, it has to be converted into urea, which is then excreted in the urine.

  1. Coagulation Factors:

The coagulation of the blood depends on so-called coagulation factors (coagulation proteins), which are produced within the liver. If there are not enough factors (e.g. fibrinogen) present during a bleeding, one speaks of a coagulation disorder (coagulopathy).
