7 Powerful Ways To Market Your Shop On Quora (Without A Budget)
Quora is the community driven Q&A platform is one of the most popular websites online. From figuring out how Bruce Wayne acquired all of his skills to learning how to build a company, there are some questions you cannot find answers on the website.
But Quora isn't just for finding interesting questions and answers. When used correctly, it can also be an incredibly powerful marketing tool for your e-commerce store.
In this post, we'll show you how you can tap into Quora's 100M user monthly in order to promote your business, research your customers and grow your audience.
The first question: why bother with Quora? After all, don't Facebook, Twitter and Instagram have much larger audiences?
A couple of reasons:
1. Millions of users
As per Quora founder Adam D 'Angelo, Quora has over 100M users each month. This is nearly a third of Twitter's 310M monthly users.
2. Search engine rankings
Because of the quality of your content, Quora gets a lot of traffic from search engines (around 30.6% than pro-Alexa).
That's a lot more than Twitter, which only gets 7% of its traffic from search.
By answering questions on Quora, there is a high chance that your answer will rank well in the SERPs, bringing you traffic for months and even years.
3. Subject specific profiles
You can have your Quora bio for any topic. If you're answering questions on fashion, you could brand yourself as a fashion expert. If you switch to marketing, you could become a marketing expert.
This "expert" tag can rub off on your own (and your store) brand.
4. Long term traffic
Your social media updates have very short half-lives. A tweet, for example, has a half-life of just 24 minutes.
This means that after 24 minutes, the tweet will be just under half of its viewers. Within 48 minutes, this will be 1/4 of the original audience, and so on.
Quora posts, on the other hand, are more "permanent". If you have an answer to Quora, it could continue to rank in the search engines for years.
That said, you are getting long-term traffic from Quora, not short-term results.
In addition to the above, Quora's demographics also line up perfectly with most e-commerce brands - young, educated and with the income savers.
This makes it an ideal platform to expand your store.
How To Use Quora To Market Your Business
There are a number of ways you can use Quora - to get long-term traffic, brand yourself as a niche-leading expert, and to brainstorm ideas for content.
1. Own your brand
If you search for a popular brand on Quora, you will see a "Subject: [Brand]" result at the top of the search results.
When you look at a brand topic, you will see a list of questions related to the brand. You can also choose to "Follow" the topic or get a brief description about it.
Creating a branded topic on Quora is a great way to get people to follow your brand (and collect questions related to it). Think of it as an extension of your existing legal media (like your blog).
Once you create a topic, you can seed with relevant questions, create an engaging description, and develop an audience within Quora. You can also use it as a reputation management tool. Thanks to Quora’s strong domain authority, questions related to your brand will be higher up in search results.
Create a branded topic, enter your brand name in Quora into the search box and select "Search: [your brand]".
From the results, select 'Topics' under 'Type'. Then select "Create Topic" in the right sidebar.
Now you can take a branded topic and plant it with questions and answers.
2. Answer questions
Quora has countless answered and unanswered questions about your business niche. Answering these questions is one of the easiest ways to develop an audience and authority in your industry.
In the long term, such answers can bring you a constant stream of visitors through search engines.
To do this, start by looking for a keyword that describes your shop or product. If you sell bikes this would be fine "Bicycle".
This would show you a list of questions related to your keyword. You can go ahead and answer these questions with your own insight.
For example, one of the first questions on the "bikes" is about helmets. If you also sell helmets in your store, you might be able to answer that question with some advice on why you need a helmet, and how to buy one.
If you're answering a popular question, there is a chance your answer will get drowned out by the noise. To mitigate this, focus on open-ended questions first.
You can find the open questions by clicking on "Answer" in the topic menu.
Since these questions have no answers, it will show you up to the top first, giving you more views.
If you answer a topic-focused question, change your bio according to your expertise. If, say, you were a cyclist for 20 years and have been running a business for 10 years, say so in your bio. This will add your authority. Plus, by typing in your shop name (without a url), you increase your brand awareness.
You can do this by clicking "Answer" on a question, then clicking "Edit Permission."
On the next pop-up, add a permission like Your Job, Education or something else. Don't add whole urls here (with "http: //") because they are not clickable. Instead, add your shop name.
Your credentials can be changed for any topic. When you're answering a question on say entrepreneurship, mention your business school background. When you are answering a question about bikes, mention your biking experience.
Here is a great example of using the credentials to promote your business:
And as always, remember to be helpful first, promotional second. Your answers are intended to give the reader current insights, rather than just a promo for your business. Useful is the only way to help build a long term audience on Quora.
3. Questions related to your niche or products
What if there aren't any issues related to your niche? Or what if you want people to answer a question related to your products?
Simple: just the question itself.
Quora gives you complete freedom to answer any question on virtually any topic.
To do this, enter your question in the search box. Make sure to express it as a complete question - rather than just a bunch of keywords (including the ‘?" At the end). Then click "Submit Question." You can even ask the question anonymously.
After you click "Submit Question", it will show up in Quora. You can then either answer it yourself (useful if you are building a knowledge base about your product) or you can invite someone to answer you (i.e. "questions to answer").
Your question should ideally:
- Relation to your business (if there is a need you can have it answered yourself to drive people to your business).
- Counting keywords related to your business so you can get traffic from search engines.
4. Building a knowledge base
Do you have an FAQ or a knowledge base on your website? Do customers who frequently come up with a few specific questions?
Quora can double-up as a worthy alternative to traditional knowledge base software, especially for in-depth, technical issues.
For example, suppose you run a bicycle shop. Customers may email you periodically to ask you about the various bike frames.
Rather than answering these questions individually, you could simply create a question about bike frames on Quora and direct customers to the correct answer.
5. Brainstorm new ideas for content
Coming up with content ideas for your blog can be a challenge. Keyword research tools can only tell you what keywords people are looking for, not the exact questions you asked.
This is where Quora comes in. Quora database revolves around human-asked and human-curated questions. These go about keywords - these are the real questions that people want answers to in a niche.
Let's go back to our "bike frame" example. In search of this topic becomes a bunch of questions that easily turns into blog posts.
From the list above, you could have ideas for three separate blog posts:
- X of the Most Popular Materials in Bicycle Frames (and Why)
- How to determine the correct hub width for your bike frame
- How to de-rust on your bike frame and accessories
For even more questions, you can go to the unanswered questions under the "Answer" tab. Each of these questions has the potential to turn into a full-fledged blog post.
6. Research new keywords
There are two ways you can use Quora to find new keywords:
A. Discover seed keywords
A "seed keyword" is essentially a broad keyword that can be plugged into a keyword research tool to find new keyword ideas.
Quora "Related Topics" list makes it a great tool for finding such keywords.
Try this: find your topic on Quora, then scroll down and find the "Related Topics" section in the right sidebar.
Searching for "bikes", for example, reveals these topics:
Each of these topics can be used as seed keywords.
More importantly, you can use these topics to group your existing keywords and organize your products. A bike shop, for example, might organize your products into three categories - "Road Bikes", "Urban Bikes" and "Mountain Bikes".
B. Find long-tail keywords
If Quora "Related Topics" are great for finding seed keywords, "Questions" is useful for finding long-tail keywords.
To find those keywords, search for your topic, then click on a question related to your niche.
Scroll down and find the "Questions" section in the right sidebar.
In this example, the stored bits are all long-tail keywords that you can use in your SEO campaign.
7. Keeping track of topics
There are two things you need to do in order to establish yourself as an expert on Quora:
- Share relevant, detailed answers
- Be consistent in answering questions
Fortunately, Quora makes it easy to find new questions consistently.
You can do this by "following" a topic by clicking the "Follow" button on the topic page.
Once you do this, new questions related to the topic will show up in your home feed. You can also bookmark a topic by clicking the 'Edit' button next to the feed in the left menu.
Besides this, you can also mark questions to answer later. To do this, click the "..." icon next to the question and select "Answer Later".
When you Next click on the "Answer" tab in the top menu bar, you will see the question under "Answer Later" in the left sidebar.
That way, you can quickly build a library of questions that you want to answer. Try to answer at least 1-2 questions each week to build an audience and start establishing yourself as an expert.
Quora offers a lot more than just entertaining questions. Because of the massive user base, it is also a powerful platform for promoting your business and conducting your niche research.
These 7 tactics will give you a head start on your store marketing. Choose one of these tactics, follow diligently for a month, and communicate the results.
