In order to create a better order, we have sorted the list alphabetically and divided it into the three categories "Capitals", "Cities with more than 10,000 inhabitants" and "Places with less than 10,000 inhabitants".

Federal capitals

In relation to the size of the country there are not really many cities in Australia, but they are often very characteristic, interesting and pretty. The eight federal capitals, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Canberra, Hobart and Darwin are characterized by their striking appearance, an individual atmosphere, their richness of contrast and countless sights. While the tropical and rather cozy Darwin exudes a rather wild charm, Sydney could be described as extremely modern, fast-paced and stylish. Almost everyone knows the image of the world-famous Sydney Opera House and the striking Harbor Bridge in the port of the metropolis, which is often referred to as one of the most livable cities in the world. The second largest city on the 5th continent is Melbourne, which doesn’t have to hide in any way from Sydney due to its cultural diversity, alternative lifestyle and impressive skyline.

In addition, Brisbane has developed into an ultra-modern metropolis in recent years, which is extremely attractive due to the year-round good climate and the proximity to many great highlights, such as Fraser Island, Glass House Mountains, Gold Coast, Byron Bay etc. Furthermore, the economically strong Perth should be mentioned, which with its beautiful surroundings, the proximity to Fremantle and Rottnest Island is definitely to be visited on a west coast tour. Also the often underrated Adelaide, which is characterized by the surrounding mountains, great beaches and a very relaxed city life, is certainly one of the most interesting cities in Australia. Of course, the state capital Canberra should also be mentioned here, which attracts many tourists due to its very conspicuous city planning, interesting museums, parliament and the War Memorial. The relatively small Hobart, on the other hand, is characterized by its cosiness and its own basic mood.

Cities with more than 10,000 inhabitants

But many other Australian cities are also characterized by a unique flair, a great atmosphere, interesting sights and beautiful surroundings (numerous beaches, unspoiled national parks, spectacular mountainous areas, etc.). For example, the sunny tourist stronghold of Cairns, the party and shopping metropolis Gold Coast / Surfers Paradise, the pretty Noosa, the student Newcastle, the wild coastal town of Broome, the desert city of Alice Springs, the surfing stronghold of Torquay or the subtropical Townsville differ due to the very good atmosphere, the extraordinary location and the optimal climatic conditions significantly different from many other places. If you want to enjoy some culture in addition to nature down unders, you can do this extensively in some Australian cities, as every metropolis has interesting museums, lively shopping streets, large shopping centers, several cinemas, pretty parks, good restaurants, authentic pubs and trendy nightclubs has to offer.

Places with less than 10,000 inhabitants

Even in places with less than 10,000 inhabitants, Down Under has some special features to offer. Certainly not every place is exciting and worth a longer stay for all tourists, but for example the chic Port Douglas, the alternative holiday resort Byron Bay, the surfer's paradise Margaret River, the opal capital Coober Pedy or the subtropical Airlie Beach (starting point for the Whitsunday Islands) one of the most popular destinations on the 5th continent.
