Why is America so against immigration

The stricter rules that limit immigration in America are "counterproductive and ineffective," a study by University College London (UCL) shows. The researchers show that stricter immigration regulations mean that people who actually want to abide by the law then use illegal methods to enter the country.

Further restrictions lead to an increased need for the use of police and security forces

Further restrictions mean that more control and more deployment of police and security forces is necessary, say the researchers. That is why they suggest that before introducing new rules, governments should think better about the effects of, for example, controls. Each person's intentions must be examined individually to prevent illegal immigration.

According to Dr. Cassile Schwartz, if the rules are too strict, 20 percent of potential immigrants will break the law to allow them to enter America.

Level of education

According to the research results, the level of education plays a major role. More educated people are less motivated to enter America illegally than people with little education and large families.

“The strongest reorientation towards non-legal channels occurs when legal family reunification is no longer an option. If immigration policy becomes too strict, governments must assume that it will further limit the already limited opportunities for immigration, "said Miranda Simon of UCL.

Stricter rules contribute to illegal immigration

The tighter controls and stricter immigration policies in America are encouraging illegal immigration, says David Hudson of the University of Birmingham, a co-author of the study. In his view, there are two sides to this policy: "Our report clearly shows that while immigration restrictions are reducing the number of legal immigrants, the number of illegal immigrants is increasing."

According to Hudson, the rules cause big problems: "Ultimately, it leads to an expensive and unsustainable need for larger and tighter border controls."

Global migration

It is estimated that there are around 258 million migrants worldwide, around 3.4 percent of the world's population. This includes people who live elsewhere than in the country of birth. Between 2000 and 2015, 42 percent of the population growth in North America was made up of immigrants. These people do not want to emigrate to Africa, Asia, Latin America or the Caribbean islands.

Illegal migrants often stay under the radar instead of applying for asylum and attracting the attention of (local) authorities. For example, they do not report to hospitals, the police or the homeless shelter, or do not take advantage of the offers of charities, because this is how the authorities become aware of them. Only then would they be included in the statistics.

Applying for a visa (ESTA) USA

Without a visa or ESTA, you cannot legally enter the USA. German and Austrian travelers need a visa or ESTA for 2018 and 2019 - without a valid ESTA, an airline is not allowed to take the traveler with them and the trip cannot be started. You should know that an ESTA or visa is also mandatory for a transit / stopover in the USA.

ESTA stands for Electronic System for Travel Authorization: a compulsory electronic travel authorization. Once an application is approved, it is immediately shared with the airline and U.S. immigration services. This way, no paper document is required and the US authorities know in advance who will be traveling.

An ESTA is valid for 2 years, but a visit cannot last for a maximum of 90 days. This 90-day period also includes a visit to Canada, Mexico or the Caribbean islands. If you want to stay longer in America, you have to apply for a USA visa at the US embassy.

A number of important conditions apply to the ESTA. You can go on a business trip with this permit, but not in the service of an American employer. In addition, travelers who have been in Iran, Iraq, Syria, Sudan, Yemen, Libya or Somalia since March 10, 2011 cannot apply for an ESTA; however, a visa application can be submitted to the American consulate instead.

You should know: even with a valid ESTA, the American immigration service can refuse entry to the traveler. This happens especially if the immigration service suspects that the traveler is a threat to US security.

Anyone who wants to apply for an ESTA can do so around the clock. It is often approved a little over 1 hour after submitting the application, but sometimes it can take up to 72 hours.
