Why do bodybuilders use steroids

"Incredibly masculine, as if you had endless strength"

Natural bodybuilding - muscles made of steel, but pure nature

Christian Henseler has been a natural athlete for over 20 years. He is committed to bodybuilding and fitness, both of which are doping-free.

Natural bodybuilding is based on the principle that athletes do not consume any performance-enhancing substances or steroids.

Natural bodybuilding competitions aim to provide a doping-free stage for bodybuilders from all over the world.

Natural bodybuilding is very strict about doping tests. Anyone who takes prescription drugs or prohibited substances will be banned.

Only athletes who have not consumed any banned substances for at least ten years are allowed to take part in the championships of the Swiss Natural Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation (SNBF).

The association now has 150 athletes and is particularly popular in the somewhat simpler classes such as "Bikini" or "Mens Physics".

The aim is to improve the image of the fitness and bodybuilding sport and to offer natural athletes an opportunity to compete with their peers.

The SNBF carries out regular doping controls. Polygraph tests and / or urine tests will take place before the competition. And the top three in each class must submit a urine sample.

During the year, unannounced urine tests take place at irregular intervals. These are done randomly or on suspicion.

There are bodybuilders who fight against the bad image of their sport - including doping. One of them is the natural athlete Christian Henseler.

Mr. Henseler, you are in good shape - and everything is pure nature. How do you "dope" yourself?

I've been doing natural bodybuilding for 26 years, really old-school and body-minded. I don't pre-cook, I don't have Tupperware, I don't use apps or wearables.

What has changed most in these 26 years?

Social media has turned this sport 180 degrees. In the past it was individualists who trained somewhere in the basement, today everyone posts everything on social media channels. All the likes pour out happiness hormones, they too can be addicting. This has changed the attitude of the athletes.

In what way?

We are much more likely to have a positive doping test because some people say: I just want to win a title, become famous. They think they might be more likely to win in the Natural athletes.

Have you already been asked whether you have helped?

In the past, many thought of steroids when someone came along with good muscles. Now you can recognize me when I go to a studio. Today it is more likely that athletes with less good muscles are asked whether they want to help.

How do you see that someone has helped?

If someone gains 30 kilos in one year, you can at least put a question mark. But you can't just look and say: He takes, he doesn't. There are typical signs such as severe acne, enlarged nipples or pronounced neck muscles. Sometimes it is a change in personality that makes someone very aggressive. Depending on how much you take, you can smell the testosterone too.

Natural Bodybuilding - what is that exactly?

Everything that is on the doping list is forbidden with us. We orientate ourselves very closely to the requirements of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and Swiss Olympic. Means such as Synthol, which is improperly injected in bodybuilding to visually enlarge the muscles, is prohibited, as is implants, for example in the calves. Breast implants, on the other hand, are allowed.

Are hard work, training and nutrition really enough to shape your dream body?

One hundred percent, yes. Training has become much more scientific, and we also know a lot more about nutrition than before. This can be seen on the stages of the natural bodybuilding competitions: There are beautiful female and male athletes who are completely "natural". Compared to other bodybuilders, they are less heavy and have less muscle mass.

Doping is widespread in bodybuilding, both among amateurs and professionals. According to your observations, how serious is the situation?

Nobody really knows. There are estimates that every fifth person in performance-oriented studios takes something. The goods are far too easily available; they are offered through dealers in the studio.

You are President of the Swiss Natural Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation (SNBF) for doping-free bodybuilding and fitness. How many purified ex-anabolic steroids users join you?

We used to have athletes like that. Not anymore, because we have to be clean for ten years. Today practically all athletes who come to us are between 20 and 25 years old.

What are the differences in performance?

If you train “naturally”, the performance curve increases steadily, but at some point it becomes difficult to increase it. With anabolic steroids, however, the advances are so huge that the body cannot adapt to the changes at all. I imagine it this way: even before you touch the dumbbell, your muscles pump up, you feel incredibly masculine and aggressive, as if you have endless strength. It must be an incredible feeling - I've never tried it.
