Advantages of extrusion for aluminum profiles

Many engineers do not know that (precision) extrusion compared to many alternative processes such as machining, roll forming and rolling numerous advantages offers. We are happy to explain to you how this technology can improve your product or the manufacturing process, and often in the process also saves time and money!

What exactly is precision extrusion for aluminum?

To put it simply: In extrusion, the aluminum is heated in a furnace until it is soft enough to be deformed. The temperature varies depending on the alloy and has a significant impact on the end result. The hot aluminum is then pressed under high pressure through a nozzle or die, which determines the final shape of the profile. After the profile has been extruded, it is cooled, stretched, hardened and cut to length.

If necessary, post-processing can then take place, for example milling, drilling of holes and surface treatments. The profile can then be assembled into a (semi) finished product.

Comparison of extrusion companies

Before we delve deeper into the world of precision extrusion, we would like to briefly introduce you to the various providers.

Not every extrusion company can or would like to offer you what you need. Many extrusion companies focus on extruding large quantities of aluminum. Mifa on the other hand mainly focuses on complex and high qualityAluminum profiles. Don't get us wrong - we don't make things unnecessarily complex, rather a complex profile is precisely that part in a product that can make all the difference. This can be the case because the part has a complex shape, has to be very thin-walled or, for example, may have a maximum deviation (tolerance) of ± 0.02 mm. The heart of our company: precision extrusion

For many decades, Mifa has been the benchmark when it comes to precision extrusion. Everything in our company is geared towards optimizing the extruded aluminum profiles and processing them into a product of the highest quality.

We renew or improve our presses very regularly and expand our machine park with everything that is necessary to improve the production process even further. From a five-axis CNC machine to a fully robotized production of forks for, among others, KTM.

Thanks to our technology, our know-how and our experience, we are able to manufacture highly complex shapes from aluminum, magnesium and other materials, with an accuracy of ± 0.02 mm. Even with straightness, torsion, concentricity, parallelism, surface roughness and fit, our extruded profiles are above the norm. Further processing is therefore often no longer necessary, so that you save corresponding costs.

 

Case: The modernization of the train sets for NedTrain

NedTrain wants to modernize its well-known double-decker trains. What does that mean? The trains will be completely dismantled and then put back together again. Mifa supplies extruded floor profiles for this. Because the profiles are mainly located under the floor, they are not or only partially visible.

This project is a European call for tenders. This means that every company has the chance to apply for this public contract. Mifa was ultimately selected from all companies. A major reason for this is that Mifa has all the technologies that are necessary for the Nedtrain project. Remember the following:

Case: Atlas project at Cern, Geneva

The Max Planck Institute for Physics is a state-of-the-art research facility whose discoveries have already had a major impact on the world of electronics. As part of the Atlas detector project, the Max Planck Institute for Physics is developing particle accelerators for the Geneva-based organization CERN.

The ATLAS project requires absolute precision in all areas. For this reason in particular, the Max Planck Institute for Physics decided on aluminum profiles from Mifa. The current standards for extruded aluminum profiles generally allow deviations of 0.15 mm. Mifa offers extrusion processes with an accuracy of 0.02 mm. For this reason, the Max Planck Institute for Physics chose Mifa as a partner in this demanding project.

Case: Contribution to ETAP lighting technology

ETAP lighting (Belgium) creates user-friendly, sustainable and long-lasting lighting. The company specializes in creating lighting comfort in the workplace. Etap products reduce power consumption to a minimum. The company employs a total of around 500 people and operates in eleven countries.

Mifa made a significant contribution to the 'D3 Downlight LED', a new model of LED application. This project was brought to a successful conclusion by means of co-engineering. Mifa was involved from the design phase to the development of the prototype and series production.
