The two sweeteners also differ only slightly in terms of their calorie balance. 100 grams of sugar contain around 380 kilocalories. Honey contains a little less per 100 grams with about 304 kilocalories, which is due to the water content. At the same time, the proportion of fructose in honey is slightly higher than in sugar. Since fructose tastes sweeter than glucose, you therefore need less honey to sweeten food and can thus save calories.

First, a distinction is made between natural and industrially produced honey. Natural honey is filled into the glass by the beekeeper directly from the centrifuged honeycomb. Industrially produced honey is mixed together from various honeys and heated. This destroys many valuable ingredients. In addition, the often read note: "Mixture of honey from EU countries and non-EU countries" obscures the origin. Because this means nothing else than that the honey can come from anywhere and sometimes also come from the nectar of genetically modified plants.

When shopping, look out for the "Real German Honey" seal of approval. This guarantees that the honey was produced exclusively in Germany, contains no additives and has not been heat-treated.

The answer to the question of whether honey is healthier than sugar can therefore be answered with an overall yes. However, it always depends on the quantity and quality of the honey. Honey, too, consists largely of sugar and is harmful to health if consumed in excess. It should therefore only be used sparingly.
