What is the longest current song

Longest piece of music in the world

After seven years there is a change in sound

Today a very special musical event is taking place in Halberstadt in Saxony-Anhalt: the longest piece of music in the world gets new tones.

The longest piece of music in the world

The longest piece of music in the world has been played continuously on the organ in the monastery chapel in Halberstadt for 19 years. This is a piece for organ by the composer John Cage from 1987. The title “Organ Squared - as slow as possible”.

Not even half an hour

Originally the piece wasn't that long - at the premiere it only lasted 29 minutes and 15 seconds. The reason why the decision was made to push the game instruction "as slow as possible" to the limit is as follows:

Strange background

Germany's first block organ was built in Halberstadt, exactly 639 years before the work was first performed. That is why the piece has now been slowed down so that it takes exactly 639 years to finish. It started in 2001 and will end on September 5th, 2640.

New notes for the longest piece of music in the world

Today, after seven years, there is to be a change in sound. For this the organ gets two new pipes, namely G sharp and E. In this way, another part of the piece should be able to be played. The change is celebrated with a ceremony, over 200 guests are invited and there is a musical supporting program. Overall, this is the 14th sound change.

A very special change in sound

This is very special, because on the one hand the longest uninterrupted sound of the first part ends today at 6 years and 11 months, on the other hand it could have been the last change in sound, because despite donations, the financing of the project is not secured.
