How can turtles eat apple
Proper nutrition for turtles
Proper nutrition is very important for turtles because otherwise they can get sick and only live a few years. Larger turtle species can reach an age of up to 200 years! Smaller species make it for 30 to 40 years. In addition, poor nutrition can lead to stunted growth in young turtles. We'll tell you what to look out for in the diet for turtles.
Diet for tortoises
First of all, it is important to know that Mediterranean tortoises are herbivores. This has something to do with digestion: This differs significantly between herbivores and carnivores. While carnivores have a long small intestine and short appendix and large intestine, herbivores have a shortened small intestine. The appendix and colon, on the other hand, are elongated.
Which plants are suitable?
Hay, made up of grasses and herbs, is an important part of appropriate feeding. Hay is very rich in crude fiber and promotes digestion, as it cleans the digestive tract and can therefore keep parasite infestation within limits. You can dry this yourself or, as an alternative, use mixtures from animal supplies.
These plants are suitable for feeding, for example: aloe, nettle, bear's garlic, daisies, goose fingerweed, raspberry leaves, white clover, dandelion, wild mallow, yarrow, pansy, dead nettle, plantain and ribwort.
What should you watch out for?
The plants you feed should be high in fiber, vitamins, minerals, and calcium. Calcium in particular is very important for the turtle's bones and shell. The food should be as low in protein, low in carbohydrates and low in calories as possible. Of course, the plants must not be poisonous (such as ivy) and fertilized. You should also not pick any plants from the roadside and feed them. Make the food supply for your turtle varied. As experts advise to keep tortoises in open enclosures, there should always be enough forage plants available.
Please do not feed food such as fruit, vegetables, meat or dog / cat food. The digestion of tortoises is based exclusively on a plant-based and low-protein diet. So you are doing your darling a disservice by feeding them other foods - on the contrary. Improper nutrition leads to severe damage to the kidneys and love, and can even lead to the death of the turtle.
Lime is extremely important for turtles. Therefore, something should always be available. For example, you can provide sepia shells or offer eggshells made from organic eggs. In addition, the tortoises must always have sufficient water available. This should be changed daily.
Diet for turtles
Unlike tortoises, turtles eat not only plants, but also meat such as river fleas, grasshoppers and mosquito larvae. Aquatic turtles tend to eat as much as they can get. This can of course be much more in human care than in the wild. The head of the turtle can be used as a guide for the amount of meat: the amount should be roughly the same size. If you are unsure, ask a specialist in a specialist shop how much food your turtle needs.
Which food is suitable?
The best way to orientate yourself when feeding is what the turtles would eat in the wild. Here the animals eat a particularly varied diet. Unlike tortoises, water turtles also eat meat, as already mentioned. For example, you can feed fish fillets, water snails, earthworms, mosquito larvae, shrimp, grasshoppers and mealworms. Aquatic plants are also suitable and should always be accessible to the animals. Meadow herbs such as dandelion or plantain should also be on the menu every now and then. On the other hand, you should avoid iceberg lettuce or lettuce - the nutritional value is too low here.
Beef or pork, for example, are not suitable. Some snapping turtles eat poultry, but here you should definitely watch out for the danger of salmonella! Legumes, tomatoes and frequent giving of fruit should also be avoided.
What should you watch out for?
With water shields, too, it is important to ensure that the food is not too rich in protein. If turtles consume too much energy, they can quickly become overweight, which of course must be avoided. Lime is also extremely important for turtles. Therefore, something should always be available. Here, too, you can, for example, provide sepia shells or offer eggshells made from organic eggs. With a varied diet, there is usually no need to feed vitamin supplements. In fact, it can do more harm than good.
