Ultrasonic cleaning - what is it?

As a wearer of glasses, you have to clean your visual aids several times a day. Many wash their glasses under running water with a drop of washing-up liquid or with ready-made glasses cleaning cloths. At the optician's, the frames, if they are not made of horn or other natural materials, are cleaned with a special ultrasonic bath. These devices are also available for the home. I have one and I am very happy with it. It is easy to use: fill in water, pour in a splash of dish soap, put glasses in, wait a moment and you're done!

Ultrasonic cleaning - that's how it works!

Ultrasonic cleaning works through what is known as cavitation. During this physical process, vibrations in the ultrasonic range (all frequencies above 18 kHz (18,000 Vibrations per second) are considered Ultrasonic.) small steam bubbles formed on the object lying in the water. When these bubbles collapse, i.e. burst like a lightning bolt, they remove the deposited dirt particles without damaging the material. The cleaning process cannot be seen with the naked eye. After use, the frame and glasses always shine like new. Actually pretty practical, especially when many people wear glasses live in the house - like with us!

What is cleaning with ultrasound suitable for?

Unfortunately, the fun doesn't come cheap. Most household ultrasound machines cost between 30 and 60 euros. As a rule, they are designed for around ½ liter of water. Glasses fit in perfectly, but the device may be too small for other objects. Because not only visual aids can be professionally cleaned with ultrasound, jewelry, silver cutlery, braces, tools, screws, metal valves and even CDs, but only if they are new and scratch-free!

What is an ultrasonic cleaner not suitable for?

Actually everything that has cracks, grooves or grooves that are difficult to access, or where it is difficult or impossible to remove dirt, can be cleaned with the fine vibrations. But this only applies if the parts have no scratches, holes or cracks! Please always check beforehand, because cracks and holes are enlarged by the pressure when the bubbles burst. Natural materials such as horn, rubber, leather or fabric, as well as gemstones and contact lenses, should also be treated in the conventional way.

How good is the cleaning?

Larger ultrasonic cleaners have a capacity of up to two liters. Even large silver candlesticks or cutlery fit in here. There are also premium models with a timer or heating to increase the cleaning effect of the ultrasound. Of course, these devices cost more accordingly. Ultrasonic cleaning is also used by craftsmen or in industrial production, because the vibrations clean smooth surfaces perfectly and also reach inaccessible places, while at the same time protecting the material.

Of course, the devices for at home do not work at such high frequencies as those for professional use in trade and industry, but even with simple models (and less vibrations), jewelry, cutlery and glasses usually shine like new after use. If it does not shine as desired after the first time, the process can be repeated as often as required. With my grandma's ornate Art Nouveau cake server, that took longer than 30 minutes. Less than a minute is usually enough for my glasses. By the way: Normal devices are usually not suitable for dentures because their frequency is too low. There are special models with a higher number of vibrations for this, but they cost several hundred euros.
