Former finance minister and senior congressional leader P Chidambaram on Tuesday sharply criticized the government and the demonetisation move and defended the protests by opposition parties in parliament demanding the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi throughout the debate. The winter session of Parliament is currently underway.

“How is it an imposition? Why not keep the clock in the house when we are discussing demonetization? Should he listen to us, ”Chidambaram said. He spoke at an event in Nagpur.

The winter session of parliament has so far seen unrelenting protest from opposition parties, who come together to raise their voices against the inadequate implementation of demonetisation policies. This had led to continuous disruption in the two lower and upper houses of parliament. The meeting ends on December 16.

The government, however, has claimed that it is ready for discussion, but the opposition is only trying to disrupt the parliamentary proceedings during zero hour in order to gain publicity.

Chidambaram was added that the demonetization was on the "biggest scam of the year" and that ‘not even a national catastrophe could cause so much suffering for the people’.
