Researchers gain spectacular new insights into a possible fourth dimension

Space-time consists of three space dimensions and a fourth dimension, time. You all know the dimensions of the room: up and down, left and right, front and back.

At least that is the current state of knowledge.

But two research teams - one in Europe and one in the United States - have succeeded in gaining groundbreaking insights into a possible fourth dimension of space.

Researchers observe the 4D quantum Hall effect

The researchers developed high-tech two-dimensional systems, the European team with ultra-cold atoms, the US team with light particles. Using these systems, they were able to create a physical phenomenon that otherwise only occurs in four-dimensional spaces: the 4D quantum Hall effect.

This effect is a layer of electrons that are located in a magnetic field that is perpendicular to the plane of the layer and that is energized. At lower temperatures and strong magnetic fields, the electrical voltage increases in the form of steps.

So far there have only been theoretical assumptions about the four-dimensional quantum Hall effect - now it has been proven experimentally.

No physical four-dimensional space yet

Unfortunately, “experimentally proven” does not mean that we will soon be able to travel into a fourth dimension.

“Physically we haven't created a 4D space, but we can gain access to four-dimensional quantum Hall physics by using this low-dimensional system,” said US researcher Mikael Rechtsman from Penn State University in an interview with “Gizmodo ".

It could take some time before a physical four-dimensional space can actually be recorded. However, these findings are already an important step forward for basic research.

Researchers no longer have to work purely theoretically, but can use experiments to investigate the effects of phenomena from four-dimensional space on the three-dimensional world.

The thesis that the universe has more than three spatial dimensions was not taken up for the first time. This possibility was considered as early as the 1920s. Some string theories even suggest that there could be up to ten dimensions. However, it could be many decades before researchers come to this conclusion - or refute it.
