Economic geography at RWTH Aachen University:

Survey on the professional situation of alumni and conclusions for the design of the course

At the Geographical Institute of RWTH Aachen University, economic geography has traditionally been one of the focal points in teaching and research. This profile, which was already developed in the Magister Artium course, has been sharpened by the switch to the Bachelor and Master courses. Many graduates of the institute, which is application-oriented in teaching and research, are now active in “economic geography” occupational fields. As part of an alumni meeting of the Chair of Economic Geography in 2012, there was the opportunity to ask the alumni about their professional career and the retrospective assessment of the study of economic geography.

You can find the result of the survey here.

  • Career prospects for geographers

We are very pleased that Theo Schierbaum has made his study available to our cooperation partner, the blog Arbeitswelt der Geographie. In the following, he has summarized the most important findings of his survey of 400 former geography graduates.

Geography is a subject that has always impressed with its breadth and diversity. At the boundary between the natural sciences and the humanities, geographers are known to have a wide variety of fields of application.

However, the diversity of these fields of application is so great that it is not included in any description of career prospects for geographers. The present survey therefore claims to be able to categorize possible fields of activity within a certain reliability and validity framework. The aim was to make statements about the career paths of geographers depending on their orientations. In addition, the results of the survey can be used to determine the extent to which certain decisions in training have an impact on important circumstances such as salary and satisfaction.
