UNICEF is the United Nations Children's Fund and is committed to realizing children's rights for every child in the world.

UNICEF is represented in almost every country in the world, but its work clearly focuses on the so-called developing countries. She is involved in the areas of family planning, health and hygiene, education and nutrition. This includes, for example, the construction of wells to supply clean drinking water, hospital wards and the provision of school supplies for children.

In addition, humanitarian aid is provided in crisis situations. In addition, UNICEF campaigns at a political level for the protection of refugees, against the recruitment of children as soldiers and, more generally, for the sustainable improvement of children's living conditions and against their exploitation and abuse. This also applies to Germany, where children still have to grow up in poverty. However, only children and projects in developing countries are financially supported.

Like the UN, the Children's Fund is based in New York City. It is one of the largest independent non-governmental organizations in the world and has its own representations in most industrialized countries that act as national committees. The national committee in Germany is located in Cologne. Furthermore, a dense global network of local partners is maintained.

The patron of the German organization is always the wife of the Federal President, currently Bettina Wulff. UNICEF is legally recognized as a non-profit association in the Federal Republic of Germany. In addition to the head office, there are around 130 volunteer working groups. A large part of the budget is financed by private donations and bequests.

However, there was an incident for UNICEF in Germany that caused lasting damage to its image. Because the DZI, the German Central Institute for Social Issues, withdrew its DZI donation seal from the aid organization at the beginning of 2008. The reason for this was the untruthful assertion that UNICEF in Germany would not pay any commission for arranging donations.

As a result, not only the entire board resigned. Much worse was the withdrawal of support from thousands of regular donors. In 2008, donation income fell by around twenty percent. The entrepreneur Jürgen Heraeus has held the post of CEO since April 2008.

UNICEF stands for United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund and means something like the United Nations Children's Fund. It was founded in 1946 as part of the UN emergence. The German representation came into being seven years later. In 1965 the aid organization was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. (sc)
