Megachurches are just a business

Churches invite you to join in the celebration

On every Sunday in Advent, Catholic and Protestant services are broadcast on the ARD and ZDF channels. In the situation of the corona pandemic and with a view to the Advent and Christmas season, the program on public television has been extensively expanded - especially on Christmas Eve.

“I am very grateful to the broadcasters for their great commitment despite the difficult framework conditions. In this way, an Advent and Christmas atmosphere comes to millions of people in their living rooms. Despite the Corona crisis, church services can be celebrated together, fellowship and solidarity can be experienced, "says Bishop Dr. Gebhard Fürst (Rottenburg-Stuttgart), Chairman of the Journalism Commission of the German Bishops' Conference.

Church president Volker Jung (Hessen-Nassau), media bishop of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD), emphasizes: “The television and radio services were very important during the Corona period. This is shown by a lot of feedback. They are spiritual guidance in difficult times. They give strength and help to endure tensions with patience. Many people will be looking for it, especially during Advent and Christmas. Therefore, many will be very grateful for the expanded offer. "

The broadcast of church services also enables people who are unable to visit a church due to the corona pandemic to take part in a liturgical celebration. For many, going to church is an important and valued part of the Christmas festivities, especially on Christmas Eve.

Throughout the day there will be numerous ecumenical, Catholic and Protestant services on television from 3 p.m., especially on December 24th. These include a Protestant Christmas vesper at 4.15 p.m. (Das Erste / ARD) and 7.15 p.m. (ZDF) as well as a Catholic Christmas mass at 9.25 p.m. (BR) and 11.20 p.m. (Das Erste / ARD). In addition, a nativity play will be shown in cinematic form for children and families in the afternoon (KiKA, MDR).
