How do I check RSS feed data

Manage an RSS feed or Atom feed

RSS feeds (and Atom feeds) are XML files generated by most blogs and websites in order to subscribe to new content on the website. In Hootsuite, they're an easy way to automatically post new content from your blogs or other blogs or websites to your social accounts. RSS feeds can be set up to post on Facebook pages, LinkedIn profiles and pages.

You can find RSS feeds for a website anywhere you see this icon .

Tip: You can also install Hootsuite's partner app integrations, Hootsuite Syndicator, and RSS AutoPublisher into your streams. They act as a feed reader to bring content into Hootsuite that you can manually or automatically publish to your social accounts.

Tip: Make sure your RSS or Atom feed is valid before you begin. Check the syntax of the feed on a validator site like this: https://validator.w3.org/feed/
If a feed has not validated, please contact the website that the feed came from. See also RSS requirements.

Add RSS feed

  1. Go to My profileand then select Account settings, settings and billingout.
  2. Choose RSS / Atom from the & Account Settings list.
  3. Optional: Choose My RSS / Atom feeds to select an organization to add the feed to.
  4. Choose Add a new feed.
  5. Paste the URL of the RSS feed into the field Feed url a.
  6. From the drop-down list, select the social media account that publishes the feed items.
  7. Choose a frequency to check the feed for content and how many new items to post at once (if that many are available). See the following section on RSS booking frequencies.
  8. Optional: In the Text "Introduce" ... a short note to be displayed before each post (e.g. "New blog post:")
  9. Select a short URL service from the drop-down list to shorten the link to the feed item.
  10. Choose Save feedout.

Feed was not validated? See RSS requirements later in this article.

Edit an RSS feed

The feed configuration can be edited at any time, but feed URLs cannot. To change a feed source, the existing source must be deleted and a new one added.

  1. Go to My profile and then select Account settings, settings and billingout.
  2. Choose RSS / Atom from the & Account Settings list.
  3. Choose My RSS / Atom feeds to select the organization that owns the feed (if applicable).
  4. Choose next to the Edit feed feedout.
  5. Make your changes, then choose Save feedout.

Pause or resume the RSS feed

Publishing from your feeds can be paused and resumed at any time.

  1. Go to My profile and then select Account settings, settings and billingout.
  2. Choose RSS / Atom from the & Account Settings list.
  3. Choose My RSS / Atom feeds to select the organization that owns the feed (if applicable).
  4. Choose the ON / OFF switch next to the feed to pause or resume publishing feed posts.

Delete an RSS feed

  1. Go to My profile and then select Account settings and billing settingsout.
  2. Choose RSS / Atom from the & Account Settings list.
  3. Choose My RSS / Atom feeds to select the organization that owns the feed (if applicable).
  4. Choose next to the Delete feed feed.
  5. Choose OK , to confirm.

Note:

  • Content dragged into an RSS feed before that feed was connected to Hootsuite will not be post-published.
  • Hootsuite can check RSS feeds up to once an hour. You can check feeds more often with the RSS Auto Publisher app.
  • If the title of a feed article, including the leading message, is less than 60 characters long, Hootsuite will also add the article description to the post.
  • Feeds posted on Facebook Pages and LinkedIn automatically remove a thumbnail image of the link preview from the image marked as og: image on the website. This cannot be customized in Hootsuite.
  • Feeds can be deactivated when Hootsuite is looking for new content and has five consecutive errors, such as: B. if they cannot reach the server or cannot check the content of the feed. See the following section.

RSS requirements

Tip: The first thing you need to check for a feed is that it will be validated on a feed validator site like this one: https://validator.w3.org/feed/

RSS feeds must contain:

  • Every contribution must contain a “pubDate” (indicates the publication date and time for an element).
  • Each pubDate should be dated earlier than the time the feed is checked. Hootsuite does not post posts with pubDates that are in the future.
  • Links in each post need to point to different source urls. If more than one post links to the same URL, Hootsuite will think it's the same post and only publish the first one.
  • Each post must have a different title or Hootsuite will think it's the same post and only publish the first one.

For more information about RSS feeds and their elements, see the RSS specification.

RSS booking frequencies

There are six intervals that you can choose between in your RSS settings. This allows you to control exactly how often your feed is checked for new posts. At each interval, Hootsuite will publish 1–5 new posts from the feed (depending on the setting). The latest post appears first.

RSS feeds are checked at the start of the times below. New content will be published within one hour from these times. All times are in GMT.

  • 24 hours: midnight
  • 12 hours: midnight, 12 noon
  • 6 hours: midnight, 6 a.m., 12 p.m., 6 p.m.
  • 3 hours: midnight, 3 a.m., 6 a.m., 12 p.m., 3 p.m., 6 p.m.
  • 2 hours: midnight, 12 noon and every even hour
  • 1 hour: every hour
