E-commerce and mail order in Germany

Sales of goods in online and traditional mail order in 2020 totaled 84.4 billion euros gross. E-commerce accounted for 83.25 billion euros of this. Overall, online trade in goods grew by 14.6 percent in 2020. Despite stagnation in the first quarter, the average growth rate for the three previous years increased by 3.3 percentage points.

The entire online and mail order business with goods and services reached 94 billion euros in gross sales.

The most popular product groups when shopping online in 2020:

  • Clothing: sales of 16.34 billion euros
  • Electronics / telecommunications: sales of 14.7 billion euros
  • Computers / accessories / games / software: sales of 6.66 billion euros.

The product groups of food, household goods and appliances, and house and home textiles showed particularly strong sales growth in 2020. Total sales of e-food rose by almost 70 percent compared to the previous year to over 2.67 billion euros.

The Bundesverband E-Commerce und Versandhandel Deutschland e.V. (bevh) anticipates renewed growth in mail order and online retail for 2021. The association forecasts a growth in sales of 12.5 percent in online retailing of goods for 2021. E-commerce with goods and services is likely to exceed the limit of 100 billion euros.

The largest online shop in Germany is www.amazon.de with sales in 2020 of 29.6 billion US dollars (equivalent to almost 25.9 billion euros.
