Is diabetes 100 curable or not
Cure type 2 diabetes with proper nutrition
Almost ten million people in Germany suffer from "diabetes" diabetes mellitus - and another seven million have diabetes without even knowing it. The first signs of the disease are increased thirst and fatigue. The diagnosis of type 2 diabetes mellitus in this country still means far too often having to take tablets or even inject insulin for a lifetime. Every second type 2 diabetic in Germany could manage without medication if they were given nutritional and psychological care - but this is rarely paid for by the health insurers. Experts criticize the fact that in Germany the long-term consequences of diabetes would rather be treated than early countermeasures with intensive care.
New study: diet change instead of medication
A new study from England shows that diabetes can be treated just as well with diet and weight reduction as with medication. The course of the disease can therefore even be reversed. For the study, the participants were put on a radical diet: for three months they only consumed nutritional shakes, almost 900 calories a day. In addition, they received psychological support, instructed them to exercise and received nutritional advice. The diabetes tablets were discontinued. The result: the shorter the participants had suffered from type 2 diabetes and the more they had lost weight, the greater their success. Participants who had lost up to seven kilograms had a seven percent chance of being able to do without diabetes medication entirely. Anyone who lost at least 15 kilograms had an 86 percent chance of achieving this goal.
Diabetics have to break the vicious circle
The fatter a type 2 diabetic is and the more he eats, the more insulin he has to inject. But that makes it even thicker. Diabetes can also damage nerves, kidneys and eyes and even lead to heart attacks and strokes. Therefore everything should be done to break this vicious circle. Those who lose weight early can avoid having to inject insulin at all. Nutritionists recommend protein shakes to help shed those pounds. With guidance, patients can learn to cook healthily, keep their insulin levels constant and lose weight. Instead of injecting insulin, they only have to take a few tablets or they can do without medication at all.
What can you eat with type 2 diabetes?
Experts recommend nutritional therapy or at least nutritional advice to diabetics: First, previous eating habits are analyzed. With a modern diet, in contrast to a diet, eating habits are changed as little as possible - this enables lasting success. Protein is important for losing weight and getting full: it fills you up, makes you thirsty and promotes muscle building. That is why it has to be dosed correctly with every main meal throughout the day. If we eat too much, the excess is stored in the fat. If we don't eat enough, we won't be full enough. The main component of meals should be as many vegetables as possible, and nuts as the perfect source of protein and mushrooms should be on the menu. Pistachios are also particularly good for diabetics: They can lower blood sugar by 0.4 percent. Meat should rarely be on the table, advise nutritionists.
Hold the weight after losing weight
After losing weight, the top priority is to keep the weight off. That is why you shouldn't eat too many carbohydrates. Because carbohydrates from bread, sweets or fruit are converted in the body into glucose, which causes the blood sugar level to rise. Carbohydrates are also fuel and are stored as fat if you don't exercise enough and don't adjust your diet accordingly. The more you move, the more carbohydrates are allowed to land on the plate.
Early detection is important
People with increased risk factors, such as over 40 years of age, significantly overweight, or family history of diabetes, should have regular examinations. A sugar test for a few euros helps to detect diabetes early. For a reliable diagnosis, experts recommend visiting a diabetologist, as these specialists have more accurate measuring devices for blood sugar than the general practitioner. If diabetes is diagnosed, the patient should start changing their diet quickly. Nutritional therapy usually comprises six sessions and costs around 350 euros. The costs are subsidized by the statutory health insurances with up to 100 percent on application. With a few exceptions, private insurances do not reimburse these costs, but pay for nutritional medical advice, which the legally insured must pay for themselves (60 to 150 euros).
