Ways To Get Out Of Nicotine Addiction

Smoking cessation made easy?

As easy as it is to get started, it is difficult to quit smoking. There is a whole range of offers for smoking cessation. They range from the so-called end point method to therapy with nicotine substitutes or the anti-smoking syringe.

Without the will to get rid of nicotine, nothing works. How do you choose the best time? How do you fight the irresistible craving for the very last but not least?

Often smokers set a fixed date on which they want to quit. With this so-called end point method, according to the Federal Center for Health Education, 80 percent of those who decide actually succeed in quitting.

In some cases, however, accompanying measures such as nicotine therapy, medical care or behavioral therapy are required.

Behavior therapy

In individual or group discussions, key situations are analyzed (when do I smoke?) And alternatives sought (what can I do instead?). The aim is to control these situations, change the attitudes of the nicotine addict and prevent possible relapses.

Such forms of therapy usually take a long time, but they also have a high chance of success. Above all, it prevents switching to another drug such as alcohol.

Nicotine therapy

What the body seems to be lacking in weaning is nicotine. So nothing could be easier than feeding it to him in small doses. With nicotine patches or chewing gum, this is done through the skin and mucous membranes. This keeps the receptors happy and doubles the chances of success.

Of course, this only makes sense if the nicotine levels are reduced over time. However, because the mood-enhancing effect of the patch or the chewing gum is a few minutes in coming, many smokers are not always enthusiastic about nicotine therapy. They are used to the faster absorption by inhaling the cigarette smoke.


In Chinese medicine it is assumed that there are three addiction points on the ear. If these are stimulated by needles, the patient is pleasantly satisfied. During a session, the nicotine addict will keep the needles in their ears for a while.

It is often recommended to repeat the session two or three times. Acupuncture always works as a supplement. If the will to quit is not there, this alternative method has little chance of success.


During hypnosis therapy, the therapist puts the nicotine addict into a trance state. He acts on the patient's subconscious through suggestion.

The therapist associates smoking with unpleasant ideas, whereas non-smoking situations are associated with positive ones. The chances of success, however, vary greatly. The scientific study situation is still too thin to say anything about the effectiveness of the therapy.

With happiness hormones against nicotine addiction

In 2000, the antidepressant Zyban was approved in Germany as a means of smoking cessation. The active ingredient bupropion has an effect in the brain that is comparable to that of nicotine: the happiness hormone dopamine and the messenger substance norepinephrine are released to a greater extent. This is to alleviate the withdrawal symptoms.

Disadvantage: Zyban soon hit the headlines because of its sometimes drastic side effects. These ranged from insomnia to epileptic seizures. The prescription Zyban should therefore only be taken after consulting a doctor.

Antibodies against smoking

Scientists in America, England, the Netherlands and Switzerland have been working for a number of years on a vaccine that will permanently rid smokers of the addiction. Before it gets into the bloodstream, nicotine is bound by special antibodies and excreted. This way it cannot get into the brain and there is no waste of happiness hormones.

The first series of tests with a new vaccine in the USA have already shown initial success. Test subjects in whom a particularly high number of antibodies could be detected in the blood most often gave up cigarettes. How well and reliably a vaccination actually works has to be clarified in further series of tests.
