English certificates

English we encounter in numerous areas of daily life. It is therefore almost a given that you have at least a basic knowledge of English. At many universities in Germany and abroad, applicants must test their skills in Placement tests or using Language certificates prove. Companies, too, often require their employees to have good language skills.

Depending on whether you need the language in an academic or professional context, you can choose between different English tests. The providers check both Knowledge of grammar, the Reading and listening comprehension as well as the Speaking skills. Often they also offer preparatory courses, which you do not have to take.

As a basis for comparing the certificates, the European Framework of Reference for Languages helpful. This defines the skills of beginners in a language (A1) up to experts (C2). This makes it possible to compare the language certificates with one another in a meaningful way.

Cambridge Certificate

One of the best-known test procedures is the Cambridge English Language Assessment. Until 2013, this was still called English for Speakers of Other Languages, or ESOL for short. The Cambridge Certificate can be obtained for the individual levels. There is also the option of taking special exams for general English or specifically for business English.

63 centers throughout Germany carry out the Cambridge Assessment. In most cases, one can attend appropriate English courses at adult education centers and universities as preparation. Alternatively, there are language trips that end with an exam for the Cambridge Certificate. The tests cost 100 to 200 euros, depending on the desired skill level.

The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is a globally standardized test that tests the suitability for postgraduate master’s courses at business administration faculties. More than 1,500 public and private universities and colleges, mainly in the USA and Great Britain, accept this test as an admission criterion.

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS), on the other hand, is aimed primarily at people who want to apply to an international or German university. This is a cooperation between the British Council, the Cambridge English Language Assessment and the IDP: IELTS Australia.

The test can be taken at the British Council's branch offices in Aachen, Berlin, Bremen, Hamburg, Hanover, Leipzig, Düsseldorf, Cologne, Munich, Mannheim, Dortmund, Frankfurt a. M., Freiburg and Stuttgart as well as in language schools abroad. Regardless of which level you reach, the test costs 210 euros.

LCCI test

The tests of the London Chamber of Commerce (LCCI) are also primarily oriented towards British English. The test procedure is particularly interesting for professional applicants who want to prove their language qualifications in English for Business (EFB), in the English Language Skills Assessment (ELSA) and in JETSET and Spoken English for Industry and Commerce (SEFIC).

The LCCI tests are offered in numerous cities across Germany. Depending on the exam selected, the costs are between 30 and around 250 euros. If you are not sure which level you should take a test at, you can take an online test on the LCCI website.

TELC GmbH is a language test provider and, as a non-profit company, offers the “European Language Certificates”. These represent a system of language tests based on the European Framework of Reference.

In the US-American language area, the certificates of the Educational Testing Service (ETS) dominate. If you are drawn to this region, you should take one of these tests. A good result in the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is seen by most American universities as a criterion for a successful application. The exams take place in language schools abroad and in many German locations and cost 240 US dollars.

TOEIC test

The Test Of English for International Communication, TOEIC for short, is carried out by the same organization and is intended for professional qualifications. The test centers are also located in English-speaking countries as well as in Berlin, Frankfurt a. M., Hall a. d. Saale, Hamburg, Munich and in Pforzheim. Participation costs between 75 and 150 euros.
