What are the latest blogging platforms
Which blog platform suits me best?
You want to start a blog and are wondering which platform you should use for it? Or are you already on the go with your first blog experiences and looking for an alternative to your previous platform?
Read here what options you have as a blogger and what advantages and disadvantages can be associated with them.
The classic among blog platforms. It is arguably the most popular worldwide and is used for most blogs. Wordpress offers the possibility to create a free wordpress.com blog or to host it yourself and use Wordpress as a CMS (content management system).
The free version is great to try out and, thanks to the many themes, also offers a lot of design freedom. However, this version remains somewhat limited, so that moving to self-hosting with Wordpress is worthwhile in the long term. The paid version can be between € 3 and € 24 per month, depending on which features you want to include. If you choose Wordpress as your CMS, you have to host your domain somewhere else, for example at "domainfactory" or one of the following providers: https://wordpress.org/hosting
Blogger.com was founded in 1999 and is the grandmother of all blog platforms. The platform is now part of the Google empire and means the advantages and disadvantages associated with it. As the owner of a Google account, you are already logged in to Blogger.com and can adapt and synchronize this individually with the other Google services. However, the design and configuration options are very limited compared to Wordpress. With HTML and CMS this can be expanded a bit.
It is completely free and very easy to use due to the small number of options. Google also offers good support. Blogger.com is a good start to try it out.
Tumblr is also free and offers some free templates as well. However, Tumblr serves more as a link between blogging and social networking. It is a suitable platform when it comes to entertaining or trying out how your own content is received. But the possibilities are too limited for professional blogging.
Wix enables anyone without technical know-how to build a blog in just a few steps. The drag & drop functionality is suitable for everyone. Within this simplicity, Wix is not intended for those who want to build complex menu and page structures. Registration is free of charge, but if you want some design freedom, you have to switch to the premium packages.
Weebly is also one of the popular platforms for starting a blog. You choose Weebly because it gives you a lot of creative freedom. You can purchase templates, which you can then individually further customize. So far so good, but this platform also seems to have a few flaws. The blogger from Bravebird summarized this so well that the article is worth a look if you think about Weebly: http://www.bravebird.de/blog/bloggen-mit-weebly-ein-kritischer-blick/
As you can see, there is really a large selection out there and the platforms presented are by no means all. Which platform is the right choice for you and your blog depends entirely on what you plan to do. If you just want to post a bit without a lot of frills in a simple framework, then Tumblr is good. If you want to try yourself out as a real blogger, see if that's something for you and experiment a little, we recommend Blogger.com. If you are considering doing the whole thing professionally in the long term, Wordpress is the best choice. To make it easier for you to move from a free platform to a self-hosted Wordpress blog, it would also be an option to try Wordpress.com instead of Blogger.com.
