In the US, the Disney + streaming service is a success. Thanks to the Star Wars offshoot "The Mandalorian". The service is now also available in Switzerland.

Since the US launch on November 12th, over 30 million people have subscribed to the new streaming giant. Disney has even exceeded its own high expectations.

However, one single title is responsible for the great success to date: the Star Wars offshoot "The Mandalorian". The series, located between the oldest and the most recent trilogy, tells of its title hero: a bounty hunter.

He's given the job of killing a 50-year-old. But he refrains from doing this when he realizes that his target is an unusual baby.

Baby Yoda steals the show from everyone

The cute face belongs to the same species as the iconic, ancient Jedi master Yoda. The 50-year-old foundling is the real star of the high-quality series - especially on social media: Memes with the green miracle creature have been making the rounds for months under the hashtag BabyYoda.

The first season of "The Mandalorian" consists of eight, relatively short episodes. Each episode lasts between 30 and 40 minutes. After such a bite, you have to wait a week for the next on Disney +.

That should annoy all those who have got used to watching several episodes at a time. And there are by no means a few: So-called "binge-watch" has long since advanced to become a popular sport.

Netflix is still holding up against it

Netflix has meanwhile survived the entertainment giant's entry into the market surprisingly unscathed. The feared slump in subscriptions has not yet occurred. On the contrary: the industry leader continues to grow briskly worldwide.

This cannot be taken for granted: Shortly before the launch of Disney +, a third of users had flirted with a quick termination of their Netflix accounts. To feel safe would still be fatal for the streaming service that produced hits like “Stranger Things”.

Especially since Netflix will soon have to struggle with other big players such as NBC Universal in the home theater market. One thing is clear: only those who have deep pockets and invest a lot have a chance of winning the groundbreaking “Streaming Wars”.

Huge archive with large gaps

In terms of budget and catalog, Disney + has a clear advantage over its competitors. The Maus-Haus can draw from a pool of classics that Netflix and Co. can only dream of. And that doesn't just mean cartoon hits like “The Lion King”, “Toy Story” or “Frozen”.

Since the takeover of 21st Century Fox in March 2019, box office hits like “Avatar” or TV evergreens like “The Simpsons” have also been part of the range. Not to forget: Disney also owns the rights to the super successful Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

However, if you want to check out all 23 MCU titles, you can still look into the tube at Disney +. Not even half of it is currently available. For example, the complete three-part film series about Iron Man is missing. One of many annoying loopholes that hopefully will be closed soon.
