How should we use library books

Borrow library books virtually with Onleihe

If you have a library card, you can borrow e-books, e-audios or e-magazines virtually via “Onleihe”. Reading is possible via desktop, app or e-reader.
Onleihe is a tool for digital lending from libraries. Numerous libraries from Switzerland are also taking part. This option became all the more important again during the corona pandemic.
In order to be able to use the digital offer, you need a membership card of a library that offers an online loan. A list of which Swiss libraries are affiliated in Switzerland can be found here. You can use the service either via the international desktop site or as an Android or iOS app.
Note: The editor tried this with an old Zurich Central Library membership card. When I tried it for the first time in 2019, the login on the ZB page worked, but the one on Onleihe did not. Upon request, we were informed that for the use of Onleihe one should first go through its library for the use unlocked must become. You cannot do this yourself in the library login.
For example, if you borrow an e-book via the app, it will be linked to your library account. This means that you can later log into your computer, for example; there it will also be available. What didn't work for us is to continue reading directly at a certain point. It only worked correctly per device.
What you will need for some copy-protected books is an Adobe ID. You can create them for free using this link.
