2 Editorial Travel is the best means of self-education. Karl Julius Weber (), German writer and satirist TITLE: ROAD BEAR; PHOTOS ON THIS PAGE: EDELTRIPS.COM, PRIVAT, ADAC E.V. Dear Readers, The question of why traveling is so appealing seems trivial at first glance. For many it is undoubtedly a break from everyday life, relaxation on the beach or in the mountains. But there is also the foreign that attracts us, the temporary immersion in another life that keeps our worldview open and flexible. Travel educates you to think for yourself. There is no better protection against any form of ideology, says the writer Matthias Politycki, who has written a book on the subject that is well worth reading (Terribly beautiful and far and wild: Why we travel and what we think about it, Hoffmann and Campe). For both forms of travel, a relaxing holiday on the one hand and the travel experience on the other, you will find many inspiring ideas in this issue. For example, there is our story about the most beautiful travel destinations for 2019, in which we introduce the mysterious Buddhist kingdom of Bhutan in the Himalayas as well as a tranquil river cruise (p. 24). Or our cover story, a camper road trip through the national parks of the USA, the classic travel adventure (p. 14). After all, the best time of the year always offers the wonderful opportunity to discover something new for yourself. How about a diving course in the beautiful Maldives, which are also much more varied than you might think (p. 42)? Or skiing in the Alps, which you can still learn as an adult (p. 34)? For even more inspiration, you can download the new ADAC vacation app for your smartphone or tablet free of charge from the App Store and Google Play. 4 Postcard Ba Na Hills, Vietnam Carried on hands PHOTO: GWENGOAT / ISTOCK Two huge stone hands that seem to grow out of a mountain and carry a golden footbridge, the Cau Vang Bridge in Vietnam looks a bit like a surrealistic work of art from Salvador Dali. The structure is the new attraction in the Ba Na Hills near the coastal town of Da Nang, which is known for its fine beaches. The Golden Bridge spans a good 150 meters over the abyss at a height of around 1400 meters. The hands (the left one is not in the picture) are not made of mossy rock, but a construction made of steel mesh and fiberglass. The Cau Vang Bridge isn't the only sight on the mountain. The Ba Na Hills were already developed into a popular resort by the French colonial power at the beginning of the 20th century. Surrounded by the jungle, there is a complete French village with restaurants, bars, hotels and a small amusement park. A Buddhist temple can also be visited. You can get there by cable car. 5 Panorama Regional News Panorama Marseille not only stands for Provencal joie de vivre and colorful port romance, but also for modern futuristic architecture. The metropolis on the Mediterranean is always changing. It is precisely the coexistence of different cultural and ethnic influences that makes it so uniquely diverse. Even in ancient times, the most important port in the northern Mediterranean was a melting pot of different cultures. It all started with the Greeks, who founded Marseille around 600 BC. They first settled the area around the old port, where boats and yachts from all over the world still dock today. From the north side of the port, visitors have a unique view of the city's landmark: Notre-Dame de la Garde. High up on a hill, the pilgrimage church with its striking striped pattern watches over the bay. Behind the ancient fortress that once protected the harbor, a modern museum complex is integrated into the historic city center. In addition to its fascinating, airy architecture, the MuCEM offers interesting exhibitions about the region and the Mediterranean. Not far away, the Panier quarter develops a lot of historical flair on a hill with artfully decorated houses. Anyone walking through the narrow streets is fascinated by the creatively designed house facades and the traditional shops, the handmade soaps Vacation Panorama Travel Tips presented by your ADAC Westphalia Marseille The versatile metropolis on the Mediterranean Your ADAC travel agency books for you in Marseille: boat trips, bus tours, guided tours Visits and much more Contact us, we will be happy to advise you. Expert tip The oldest city in France At 2,600 years old, Marseille offers a rich cultural heritage Ruben Paulo-Gomes from the ADAC travel agency in Dortmund on a successful excursion. Tel .:, I was particularly enthusiastic about the area around Marseille. From the old port we took an excursion boat to the Frioul Islands, which are a few kilometers off the coast. The Chateau d If, world-famous through the novel The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas, is enthroned on one of these islands. There are also unique landscapes to discover on the coast, for example in the nearby Calanques National Park. Here the rock formations in front of the azure blue water are impressive and in some places form romantic bays that can only be reached by boat or on foot. PHOTOS: SIMONSKAFAR / ISTOCK, ADAC E.V. 8 Inspiration Camper USA In the Wild West A motorhome road trip through the southwestern USA, where the sky is wide, the earth is red and the canyons are deep. In three weeks from Los Angeles via twelve national parks to Las Vegas TEXT Edel Seebauer On the road With the camper it goes through the endless expanse in the southwest of the USA, here in Arches National Park 14 6/2018 6 /

9 Inspiration Camper USA The day is still young when we drive our motorhome to Grandview Point. I sit down on the edge of the rock with a cup of coffee and watch as the first morning light bathes the Grand Canyon in a soft pink and the earth beneath us is tremendously exposed. If space gives people the feeling of freedom, then you will feel it here. Traveling in a motorhome is perfect for the spectacular landscapes of the American West: We reach the park sights long before the crowds arrive. No packing and unpacking in unadorned motels, no need for fast food. In three weeks we will visit twelve national and state parks. We start in Los Angeles, cross the dry Californian plain, drive over the great Colorado Plateau through Arizona and Utah and after 2000 miles reach the glittering Las Vegas in Nevada. Briefly through Beverly Hills To put away the nine-hour time difference, we first stock up on good vibrations in the relaxed beach towns of Los Angeles. Santa Monica and Venice Beach still have that much-lauded California feeling of the Beach Boys. Celebrated beach culture, surfers, cool architecture and restaurants put you in a good mood. The next day we drove once over Mulholland Drive and through Beverly Hills, painted the handprints of the stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, then we are ready for camper life. After the instruction in the motorhome, we do the bulk shopping on the way to the highway. At Vons and Safeway you get a customer card and save on your first purchase. Barbecue tongs and grates should not be forgotten, as well as Mother Road stop in Seligman on the legendary Route 66 Joshua tree The imposing trees from the agave family reach a height of 15 meters. as firewood is prohibited in some parks. Then we torture our way through the weekend traffic jams in the greater Los Angeles area until the Joshua Tree National Park finally approaches. What a contrast to the sheet metal avalanches of L.A. Lonely, our motorhome stands in a fascinating desert landscape from which rocks rise above rocks and adorn the magnificent Joshua trees up to 15 meters high. We camp alone in a wide corridor, the first steaks from Bob's Market in Santa Monica are being grilled, which are not cheap, but will be the best of the whole trip. The clear night brings out its constellations, and we nestle closer to the campfire. Our hiking tip in Joshua is the 49 Palms Oasis, a hidden fan palm oasis with cool spring pools. Natural wonder of the Grand Canyon As we continue our journey in the little nest of Seligman, we sniff the myth of the legendary Route 66. In the bizarre saloon of the Roadkill Cafe, you can relax and have a beer, even if one or the other guest is wearing a Colt loosely around his waist. In Williams, 100 kilometers from the Grand Canyon, we experience our coldest night and commit a beginner's mistake. We are already on the Colorado Plateau at 2000 meters and should have removed the water hose. Completely frozen in the morning, it takes a lot of hot water and the friendly support of the sun before we can get away. What will it be like, the first look at the Grand Canyon? His Spanish explorer García López de Cárdenas fell on his knees in awe at the sight of him. As one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Grand Canyon is a tourist magnet. The entrance sign Campgrounds full suggests a corresponding rush. On the huge Mather Campground, however, the pitches are so widely scattered that you only notice the neighbors when the scent of burning pine cones wafts over from the grill fire. You cannot miss the abyss, we are called out in greeting. At the Visitor Center we first have to push prams, video cameras Monument Valley The striking table mountains of the Navajo area are known from several westerns Nature as a sculptor The rock arches in Arches National Park appear like sculptures and hurrying tour groups dodge until we slowly make our way on the South Rim Trail remove from the hustle and bustle; It becomes more and more empty and then very quiet. Partly close to the abyss or on rocky outcrops, the unobstructed views in the deep sunset are magnificent. Tip: The free guided tours of the park rangers are highly recommended. Stop in the western setting The Grand Canyon is experienced most intensely when you go into your heart, for example on the South Kaibab Trail, which leads down to the Colorado River. Anyone who hikes even part of the gorge down to Ooh Aah Point, Cedar Ridge or Skeleton Point will be struck by its immensity and grandeur. Layer by layer, almost two billion years of earth's history are exposed under our feet. Constantly changing colors and majestic formations, sometimes reminiscent of a temple, sometimes a pyramid. Two completely exhausted Americans come towards us. In fact, they hiked from the North Rim, the north rim of the canyon, were on the Colorado River at midnight, and are now absolutely insane at 8 a.m. just before the South Rim! A mule trek with overnight guests from the Phantom Ranch also passes us, two condors glide over our heads. Most turn back at Skeleton Point. Contrary to the warning signs, we decide to move on. We are fit, the days are not too hot yet, and I really want to put my feet in the Colorado one day. At the bottom of the canyon the heat builds up at 32 C. The 1500 meters of altitude again are extremely exhausting, I drink like a camel and after more than ten hours, completely flat but happy, I set my foot back on the South Rim, at a pleasant 17 C. After this experience we are looking forward to our next stop: Monument Valley, the western backdrop par excellence and reservation of the Navajo Indians. We have a three-hour drive ahead of us. Via the Desert View Drive we leave the canyon with one last beautiful view. We drive comfortably and almost dead straight through gentle desert formations until suddenly the striking rock towers of Monument Valley rise up on the horizon. 16 6/2018 6 /

10 Inspiration Camper USA Expert tip Sylvia Faltlhauser from the ADAC travel agency in Munich-West about hiking and Las Vegas Take enough time for the national parks if you also want to hike. On the short standard walks, the paths are sometimes quite crowded. The beauty of the parks often only really opens up to you when you spend a little longer time there and travel away from the main paths. There is information material in the visitor center, which is well signposted in every park. In Las Vegas you should definitely watch the free water fountain show in front of the Bellagio Hotel with music. Also recommended: the brunch The Buffet in the Wynn Hotel (daily) a huge selection of dishes at a good price in a stylish ambience. ADAC travel information about the USA: bit.ly/1p9wquu Video: The Wild West: bit.ly/2pmaqnx We feel as if we are traveling into a monumental painting. When you arrive at Goulding s Campground, there is time for the big laundry. You notice a lot in the laundromat. Meat lovers send me to the grocery store at the crossroads, and for a change, an excellent lamb lands on our grill. For the evening we booked a sunset drive through Monument Valley. While our app Magical Sunrise at the Mesa Arch, the impressive landmark of the Canyonlands driver, a Navajo Indian, takes us off-road deep into the soul landscape of his ancestors, the sky turns melodramatic, sandstorms come up and drive us back into the jeep again and again . The natural spectacle seems like a private performance for us, all other vehicles have now disappeared. All that's missing is the mandatory photo at John Ford Point. With the famous western motif, there is no longer a Navajo waiting to put us on a horse for a handful of dollars. We're on the road again and Johnny Cash's album Live at Folsom Prison accompanies us into Utah. By the way, we quickly got used to driving the Motorhome (Class C-22 7m). You don't want to miss the elevated seat and the view. While the Americans steer entire houses through the country on wheels, we find our rolling room with a view extremely comfortable and easy to maneuver. Two spectacular viewpoints follow: Goosenecks is a high art of architecture, where the San Juan River winds 400 meters deep through the gorge like a gooseneck. At the lonely Needles Overlook, the view falls on an endless sea of pinnacles, which from a distance resembles a mega-city. It really comes to life in the tourist boomtown Moab, the gateway to the popular Arches National Park and Mecca for off-road freaks. Families in the camper van with a trailer for quad vehicles are part of the townscape, and in the excellent Moab City Market everyone refills their fridge. Arches National Park is famous for its red rock arches, which wind and weather have created in a globally unique collection of over 2000 are said to be. We can already see many highlights from the road, others can be hiked. Fiery Furnace is a veritable maze of rocks with the guarantee of getting lost if we weren't with a ranger. The exciting guided tour should be booked in advance as well as the fantastically located Devil s Garden campsite. The golden sunset is followed every evening from the surrounding rocks. During the night Campfire Talk we meet our ranger again, who captivates us with gruesome stories. In the pitch dark, the families make their way back. Fortunately we have head torches. We bring an Indian family with a Funzel lamp safely back to their camper; as a thank you they pack us vegetarian samosas. Insider tip Capitol Reef Park Glorious morning light lures us out of the motorhome and we set off early for Dead Horse Point. From the plateau we are served unforgettable views like on a silver platter. The Colorado seems close enough to touch, as it meanders through the red sandstone plateau. The most famous of all rock arches, the Mesa Arch, is just half an hour away in the Island in the Sky District. Seeing the window to the horizon at sunrise is undoubtedly a highlight. Capitol Reef National Park is then a hidden gem. It is a bit apart from its competitors. A gigantic fold of earth rose like a reef when the Colorado Plateau began to rise millions of years ago. On the Scenic Drive we steer along colorful rock formations and through the orchards of Fruita. In the rhythm of Scenic Byway 12, one of America's dreamy panoramic roads, it goes to the small Kodachrome Basin Park. We couldn't have placed our mobile home nicer between the crater-like sandstone walls. There is still time to climb up to Angel's Palace before the evening barbecue. As in the magical world of The Lord of the Rings, we face a stone palace; Wizard Gandalf will appear any moment. From comfortable enchanted forest The barren gorges of Bryce Canyon surprise with green On a hiking tour Sturdy footwear is a must for tours through the national parks. Bed perspective, I marvel at the pale pink backdrop in the evening. Only 23 miles further, Bryce Canyon welcomes us at 2,700 meters above sea level with a heavy snow shower. After half an hour the spook is over and the sun breaks through. We ask the ranger about the hike to the Queen's Garden. We will get muddy boots, but otherwise no problem and we will descend directly into the world of hoodoos, an enchanted sculpture garden made of towering orange-red pinnacles that are still covered with white sugar from the snow. The rush of scenery continues seamlessly in majestic Zion National Park. Mormon settlers biblically named this place Zion after the royal seat of David. Here you automatically turn your gaze to the sky, marvel at the enormous rock massifs that change from gray to pink, orange and blood red and are crowned by bright, almost white domes. Those who enter this park with hiking boots will take away unforgettable impressions at the Observation Point or at Angels Landing. The night before Las Vegas is the last in our motorhome. At sunset at Atlatl Rock in the Valley of Fire, the red rocks glow once again with our barbecue fire. From the starry sky to the City of Lights: In Las Vegas we finally go into the insanely perfect machinery of pleasure, here too you will definitely be amazed. 13 Inspiration Travel Trends Where are you going in 2019? Which holiday destinations and types of travel are trendy? Which cities and regions promise special experiences in 2019? Seven tips for explorers, culture lovers and those looking for relaxation Taktshang monastery The tiger's nest is a landmark in Bhutan TEXT Christoph Seifert D Bhutan Mysterious Kingdom he small Buddhist kingdom of Bhutan is surrounded by China and India in the majestic mountains of the Himalayas, is about the size of Switzerland and a special country in many ways. Its economy is not growth-oriented; the philosophy of people's gross national happiness takes precedence. Television was not officially introduced until 1999. And environmental protection has long been in the constitution, which is why over 70 percent of the country is still forested today. All of this makes Bhutan one of the most fascinating and pristine travel destinations on earth. Snow leopards, tigers and red pandas roam through the national parks, there are magnificent temples and monasteries such as the Taktshang, the tiger's nest, which sticks spectacularly to a mountain west of the capital Timphu at an altitude of over 3000 meters. And at colorful festivals like the Punakha Drubchen and Tshechu you can immerse yourself in the fascinating culture. Tourism is limited by the comparatively small number of hotels and fixed daily flat rates. But the country is increasingly opening up to guests. At the end of 2018 and the beginning of 2019 alone, five luxury lodges of the renowned Six Senses chain will open in Bhutan. 14 Travel trends Inspiration Italy Unknown Basilicata Everyone is familiar with Tuscany, Apulia and Veneto as well. But the Basilicata? The little-known region deep in the south of the Italian boot is still an insider tip for tourists. What should change, however, as Matera is European Capital of Culture in 2019. The medieval rock city, carved in tuff, with its labyrinthine alleys looks downright spooky and beautiful at the same time and has already served as a backdrop for Hollywood blockbusters such as The Passion of Christ. Matera fascinates with rock-hewn churches that are thousands of years old and the cave dwellings of the old town, the Sassi, which are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. But also otherwise the Basilicata, which has coasts on the Tyrrhenian and the Ionian Sea, has a lot to offer. There is the wonderful seaside resort of Maratea with its colorful houses, the green slopes with lemon trees and the secluded rocky bays and small beaches. Or the Pollino National Park in the southern Apennines, where wild rivers, waterfalls and impressive canyons run through a great area for hiking. And finally, mountain villages worth seeing such as Castelmezzano and Pietrapertosa, which cling spectacularly to the rock of the Lucanian Dolomites. For those who love the thrill: the villages are connected by a zipline. How do you get to Basilicata? The best way to reach Matera in the east is via Bari, the western region, for example, via Naples or Lamezia-Terme in Calabria. More information at: adacreisen.de/italien The old town of Matera is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, whether it's the spectacular Wales Coast Path, the world's longest coastal footpath at 1,400 kilometers, the giant underground trampoline Bounce Below in a disused slate mine or the Triumph Adventure Experience, the new off-road mecca for bikers: the small Celtic country in the south-west of Great Britain has developed into a true paradise for outdoor and adventure holidaymakers in recent years. Those who know the island have long known that Wales is at least as scenic and culturally worth seeing as the famous Cornwall in the south or the Scottish Highlands in the north. There are numerous medieval castles such as the imposing Conwy Castle to discover, picturesque mountain landscapes with raised bogs and crystal-clear lakes such as in the Brecon Beacons and Snowdonia National Park, as well as breathtaking cliffs and beaches. Our tip: Take a classic road trip from Cardiff, for example on the routes of the Wales Way (thewalesway. Com / de), and steer through the lush green country. Wales is just as big as Hesse and can be easily explored by car. Further information at: adacreisen.de/wales Llyn Idwal The legendary lake in the Glyderau mountains of Wales 26 6 / /

15 Inspiration travel trends Anyone planning a long-distance trip in the coming year should definitely consider the South American country as a holiday destination. According to the latest Global Travel Forecast analysis, which forecasts prices for flights, hotels and rental cars, Argentina is set to become cheaper in 2019 compared to many other long-distance destinations. In any case, the eighth largest country in the world has plenty of material for travel planning on offer. Above all the pulsating Argentina tango and glacier metropolis of Buenos Aires, the most European city in South America with splendid boulevards and passionate tango shows like in the San Telmo district. Then the nature of Argentina has its big appearance: on the border with Brazil with the mighty Iguazú waterfalls, which thunder down over 80 meters. In the Andes of Patagonia, where in the Los Glaciares National Park the bizarre granite mountains Fitz Roy and Cerre Torre tower over 3000 meters into the sky and the ice masses of the impressive Perito Moreno Glacier enchant. Oh yes, and then there is the up-and-coming Mendoza wine region in the west. Small downer: the distances should not be underestimated, if you want to experience everything, you can hardly avoid domestic flights. ADAC Membership Tour Patagonia: adacreisen.de/membersreisensued Amerika Perito Moreno Glacier in the Andes of Patagonia Burj Khalifa in Dubai The skyscraper rises 828 meters into the sky. Exciting new attractions are springing up like mushrooms in the sheikdoms on the Persian Gulf: in Abu Dhabi the spectacular Louvre Museum and the Warner Bros. World theme park, in Dubai the Virtual Reality Park, Legoland and the al-serkal art district. And by the time of Expo 2020, the futuristic Dubai Creek Tower is to tower over the Burj Khalifa with 828 meters, currently the highest skyscraper in the world, by an impressive 100 meters. Well-known sights and highlights such as gigantic shopping malls, the imposing Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque or the Liwa desert oasis could also be listed in large numbers. And a lot has happened in the lesser-known Emirates as well. Fujairah, the sheikdom on the Gulf of Oman, has made a name for itself as a first-class diving destination, Sharjah and Ras al-Khaimah present themselves with chic new hotels as quiet beach and family paradises, the latter emirate also as a top travel destination for active vacationers: Mountain bike routes, via ferratas and the longest zipline in the world await in the 2000 meter high Hajar Mountains. In short: high time to take a look at one or the other emirate for yourself. The flight time is moderate at just under six and a half hours. Tip: The summer on the Arabian Peninsula is quite hot, but the hotel prices are also cheaper than in the winter season.
