What are dice?

cube or Game dice are part of countless board games and the core of every dice game. Throwing a die is used to generate a random result.

Abbreviations and technical terms

  • A Double refers to a throw in which two or more dice show the same number.
  • W6, W10, W20, etc. are abbreviations for cube types. The W stands for “dice”, the number for the number of sides. A D6 is therefore a six-sided die.
  • d6, d10, d20, etc. are the English-language abbreviations of the cube types. A W6 is called d6 (en. Dice) in English.
  • W6 in corresponds to a random distance between one and six inches. This is determined with a six-sided dice.
  • When an event on the 4+ arrives, a die roll of four or higher is required. This corresponds to a 50:50 chance when using a D6.
  • A 4+ litter is not general knowledge of the dice, but describes a saving throw from the tabletop gameWarhammer 40,000.

What types of dice are there?

Cubes come in all shapes, materials and colors. The most common models are made of wood or plastic, have between four and twenty eyes and have rounded corners and edges to improve rolling behavior.

D6: The everyday dice type

Six-sided dice have been in use around the world for thousands of years. They enjoy great popularity due to their clear number of options. Furthermore, thanks to their square shape, they are easy to store.

The chance of throwing a certain number is 16.6 percent. The sum of the numbers on opposite sides is always 7.

W10: 1 to 10 or 0 to 9?

The ten-page W10 are extremely exciting constructs because they are in three different versions. If a single D10 is included with the purchase of a dice set, it is likely to be labeled with the numbers 1 to 10.

With two W10s, both variants 0 to 9 and 00 to 90 are included. Throwing both dice together they result in a number between 0 and 99. Whether a 00 + 0 results in 100 depends on the rules of the respective game.

The chance of throwing a certain number is 10 percent. The sum of the numbers on opposite sides depends on the lettering.

Examples of games with W10 are:

  • Shootout in Dingstown
The D10 is the only dice in the Western game. This should enable beginners to better engage with the topic of tabletop.

W20: For difficult decisions

For example, you can determine with twenty-sided dice Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) Player, whether a project is successful. For this reason, D20 throws are also referred to as decision throws.

The chance of throwing a certain number is 5 percent. The sum of the numbers on opposite sides is always 21.

Examples of games with W20 are:

  • Frostgrave
Joseph McCullough, the author of Frostgrave, describes his decision in favor of the W20 as a deliberate differentiation from the W10, which is widespread in tabletop mass battles. To sum up Frostgrave Miniatures, like D&D Characters to be seen as individuals rather than as a slaughterhouse.

Special cubes

Special dice are used when the players do not have to scroll through a resolution table for a long time to determine a result. The manufacturer expects this to result in a low entry hurdle and thus a larger target group.

Examples of games with special dice are:

  • Mortal Gods
In keeping with ancient Greece, the mythical creature Pegasus is depicted on the dice. It activates the special abilities of the units.
  • Mouse and mysticism
Actions with sword, shield and bow are also dealt with here. The cheese strengthens the mice on their arduous journey.

Role play dice

Finally, we come to a type of cube that is not at all. A set of six to seven dice is called a role-playing dice. This contains the dice D4, D6, D8, 1-2x D10, D12 and D20.

Are there rules for how to throw a dice?

It differs from game to game how and with which tools a die is rolled. Usually, the cube should bounce a bit as it rolls and come to a stop on a flat surface.

  • There are hardly any obligations during a game night.
Conflicts usually revolve around whether a cube is uneven or rolled far enough. A simple re-throw usually helps here.
  • Tournament athletes, on the other hand, are subject to detailed rules.
For example, according to the tournament rules of the EUBGF, 1.3 Edition, Section 4.1 Paragraph IV, a valid throw from a dice cup consists of "vigorous but not excessive shaking of the dice [...] and then rolling the dice out of the cup across the field".
  • Tabletop games sometimes have quite self-deprecating rules.
So were litters in an early Warhammer 40,000 Edition automatically as failed if they missed the tabletop. Anyone who does not hit a 183 × 122 cm playing area with a 12 mm cube cannot issue orders to their armed forces.

Why are dice cups used?

Puzzle or Dice cup should prevent irregularities and wrong play when throwing the dice. They are filled with several game dice, shaken and then emptied on the table. High-quality dice cups can be recognized by the lips on the inside. The dice definitely jump through them when rolling out.

Cube towers strike in a similar notch, but stand in a permanent place on the table.
