In this post, I'm going to show you how to extract your competitors' backlinks.
It's a simple process that allows you to get the link profile of other websites.
The biggest challenge, however, is knowing what to do with your competitors' backlinks.
But don't fret - we will everything describe in detail about this SEO process.

There are many benefits to monitoring your competitors' backlinks.
The first step in tracking your competitors' backlinks is to analyze their link profile.
By monitoring their backlinks you can see how many websites are linked to them.
Having this information close at hand will benefit you as a website owner.
Because here is the kicker:
You can get a holistic view of how you got to the top of the SERPs!
Of course, as mentioned earlier, there is more to be done with monitoring backlinks. The list of backlinks won't mean much if you don't do anything about it!
What does that mean?
So you have a list of websites referring to your competitors.
Next, you need to filter the results to see only the relevant websites.
Lastly, you need to find a way to get a backlink from the same sites.
When it comes to competitor backlinks, here are some things to keep in mind:
Since they are already linked to your competitors, there is a good chance they will be linked back to yours too!
Spying on competing links plays a crucial role in creating authoritative backlinks to your website. It's a scalable and sustainable technique to improve your website's SEO performance.
Gone are the days when link building was a numbers game. These days you have to be tough and work smart to create high quality backlinks to your website.
For example, a single link from a site like Mashable or TechCrunch is worth more than thousands of links from mediocre sites.
So, if you focus on collecting competitive backlinks, you can make your website a success quickly!
How can you keep track of your competitors' backlinks?
Now that we have determined the value that competitor backlink research brings to the table, it is time to discuss the exact process of searching.
In particular, we're going to discuss the most basic way to find your competitors' backlinks using Google search.
In the search bar, enter:
Link: [Competitor URL] Page: [Competitor URL]
For this search query, we use Google search operators to filter the results.
" link "refers to the website that links to the competitor's URL.
Note that this search operator became obsolete in 2017. However, it remains a useful alternative for finding backlinks on Google.
" Site "shows you indexed pages of the competitor URL.
The sign „-“ in front "Site" means that we with the ecxeption of Competitor URL Pages. This way we only see pages from other websites that link to your competitor.
When using this search query, replace the competitor's URL with your own.
When you run this query, we're reviewing Neil Patel's link profile:
In the results below, you can see websites that link to Neil Patels. The search query also hides pages from Neil Patel's website.
To generate 100 URLs for each page, click on the page Settings> Search Settings .
Then you have to click the results per page on " 100 " switch.
When you're done, return to the SERPs to extract the backlink information for easy reference.
To do this, you need to download SEOQuake.
It's a Chrome extension and a Firefox add-on that allows you to split SERPs and web pages according to different SEO metrics.
Once you've downloaded and installed SEOQuake you should see this section about SERPs:
Click Export CSV to download the sheet.
Once that's done and you've opened the file, the data will look like this:
It doesn't make sense because the formatting of the sheet is disabled.
So before opening the file through SEOquake, make sure to convert it to XLS or XLSX first so that you can easily open the file with Microsoft Office or Google Sheets.
After correctly converting the file, the data should look like this:
Each link is broken down into SEMrush's various metrics.
When creating links, you want to focus your energies on getting links from websites with high SEO scores.
For example, if the site your competitor got a link from has a SEMrush rank within 100, you need to find a way to get a link from that site.
By working on getting links from the best websites, you could soon be accelerating your SEO growth!
However, we have just downloaded the top 100 results. Neil Patel has over 503,000 backlinks for you to review and review.
To go to the next 100 links, go to the next page and repeat the process.
Now I've detailed this process so you can understand how difficult it is to manually spy on your competitors' backlinks.
Because I don't recommend that to you at all!
As mentioned earlier, Google has discontinued the "Link" search operator and no longer returned any new results.
Also, there is no point in repeating the exact process for every 100 links from SERPs.
There is so much more you can do with your time than extracting backlinks from competitor sites!

The first two columns of the results are the side and trust ratings. The higher they are, the more authority the site has.
Therefore, if you want to organize the authority of your competitors' backlinks, list them from highest to lowest.
This eliminates the process of figuring out which site is the best place to get a backlink from.
You may also see organic competitors who have a link profile similar to yours. It lists websites that use the same referring domains as you.
The table shows that too Level of competition . The higher the level, the more similar you are with this site. It's a good index to see which websites to look out for when running your link building campaign.

What to do with competitor backlink data
We've discussed the things you can do with all of the backlinks you've accumulated using SEMRush.
What is more important, however, is knowing what to do with all of this data.
The goal is to use your competitor's link profile to build your link profile.You may even have to "steal" most of them by getting a link from the site they have one on.
But everything is fair when it comes to link building! It's just about using the data sensibly.
Below are some ideas on how to turn competitor backlinks into yours.
1. Identify and acquire your competitor's best backlinks
This can be done through any other backlink checking tool. But to be honest, none are more effective than SEMRush.
In particular, SEMRush has a feature called Backlink gap which is best suited for this purpose.
Backlink Gap simultaneously compares the backlink profiles of five competing websites.
All you have to do is provide the URLs and SEMRush will do the job. When you do this, you will see websites pointing to your competition, but not you.
If more backlinks are discovered, you can use the " Gaps “Or identify links / websites that might benefit you.
In the example above, four of the biggest shoe brands will compete against each other to see where each brand's backlinks are coming from.
There is even additional information when you click on certain dates. You will get a brief summary of the day's backlink activity. This is incredibly useful for anyone interested in daily reports.
So what do you do when you have a list of missed backlink opportunities?
They reach out to these sites (the high quality ones anyway) and try to add your links.
They analyze the backlinks and find out why your competitors are mentioned while you are being verbally abused.
In most cases, when contacting the author, you will be surprised how your link can be added.
If your competitor for example Was linked in a post that contains a list of products for your business, ask if the author would consider adding yours as well.
The same goes for scenarios in which your competitor quotes direct quotes about your industry. You can offer to add another perspective in exchange for a link.
How often you get in touch is entirely up to you. The important thing is that you stay polite and never end up as annoying.
2. Check where competitors are guest posting
Guest posting is definitely not dead. You will be surprised how many of your competitor's backlinks are by-products of guest posting.
So why not benefit from it?
Your competitor's backlinks are a treasure trove of guest posting opportunities. You need to take care of it right away.
To find opportunities with SEMrush, type Enter your competitor's domain and click Backlinks.
From here, you need to filter the results using the following options:
- Finding Anchors - [blogger's name]
- By type - text
- Click "Follow" instead of "All Links".
Once you've got the filters set up correctly, you should see:
Again, not all results show websites where your competitors have guest posts or two. Even so, it wouldn't hurt to search the list to see websites where you could possibly be able to post your own guest post.
Because here's the thing:
If somehow your competitor was able to land a spot on a quality website that accepts guest posting, so can you!
Every site is different, but there is nothing wrong with emailing the site introducing yourself and offering your services.
If they're interested in the topics your competition has to offer, there's a good chance you can add something of value.

3. Check where your competitors are leaving comments
Backlinks can be in the form of comments.
Your competitor leaves comments on online forums, blog posts, and other places online.
And sometimes these comments take care of amazing Backlinks.
If you look at your competitors' backlinks, you can see where they left comments.And if you are smart you would take this opportunity to leave comments as well.
To do this, go to SEMrush Domain Analytics> Backlinks and click on Anchor in the menu.
Next, scroll down and find the name of the blogger or the person who owns the site.
We want to see the backlinks that use the name as anchor text. It's what most bloggers use when leaving comments on a website.
After clicking you should see something like this:
Granted, not all results are blog comments. But you can bet you'll run into a handful of them along the way.
This is because inexperienced and advanced bloggers are actively using blog comments as a link building tactic.
On the other hand, there's a good chance you'll find backlinks in forums. While most marketers would ignore links from these sources, you may want to dig deeper.
You could discover niche forums where your audience is most likely to hang out.
So you're not just creating links, you're making your website available to a whole new audience!
4. Benefit from "lost" backlinks
There are many reasons a competitor would lose links they once owned:
- The website owner could have removed the link directly
- The page could have been unpublished
- The post / article has been edited
- The page will now be redirected.
If your competitor is good, they will find ways to get those lost links back.However, there is a good chance these links will be "lost" on them forever.
To steal these links, log into your SEMrush account and go to the Backlinks page of the competitor URL you are analyzing.
Scroll down the page to view the backlinks and check the "Lost" box.
You need to sort the list in descending order Page rating and Organize trust assessment . This is a great way to display the best sites on the top.
Open the top pages to verify that the link has indeed been removed by the website owner. If so, here's a way on how to get a link in place of your competitors.
Contact the website owner and ask if they can include your link to the website instead.
Also, you only want to contact websites that are of great value and allow do-follow links.Don't waste time talking to website owners or writers who don't have links unless there's some value outside of link building.
Once you have a list of websites to contact, the next step is to determine why the link was deleted in the first place. What you do next depends on the website owner's considerations.
- The article has been rewritten - Your competitor's link was removed because the article was updated. You should contact the author and ask if you can be added instead. Of course, you should be able to contribute something valuable.
- The link has been replaced - The link could have been replaced because the author discovered a better source. Find out what that source is. When you have content that matches this source, reach out to the author and let them know what you have to offer.
- The site removes old links - Some sites generally crawl their pages and remove links that they think are no longer useful. There is not much you can do if they remove links as part of their housekeeping initiative. You can still try to contact them and maybe get lucky.
Next, email the website owner and ask them to create a link to your website. Take into account why the original link was removed. Also explain the value of linking to your website.
5. Make your content 10x better
This is where things get interesting.
Websites link to your competitors for a reason. And the most likely reason why?
You can use backlink information to find the competitor's most frequently linked pages.
To do this, enter your competitor's URL on SEMrush and go to Backlinks> Indexed Pages.
It shows the pages with the most referring domains as backlinks.
Now comes the hard part.
Find content similar to yours and ask yourself the following questions:
- What kind of content is your competitor creating?
- Why do websites always cite them as resources?
- How helpful are these articles?
- What makes this site better than mine
Once you've got your responses, the next step is to rewrite and improve your old content much like your competitors'.
The aim is to create better content than your competitors.
And the best way to create better content is to check out what others have created and implement the same tactic!
I mean, if it works for you, it should work for you too!
Use SEMrush's SEO content template to create better content.
You can create SEO friendly content by analyzing the top 10 pages for your target keyword.
PS If you don't already know your target keyword, read it first!
From here, enter your keyword phrase into the search bar.
After creating an SEO template, you should see the top recommendations. These will help you create the best possible contribution on the topic.
Note the semantically related words and the length of the text. Mention the words in your content and keep the text length close to the recommended words.
Remember: the idea is to make your content similar to the top 10 pages for your keyword.
