For the perfect reach: These are the current top hashtags on Instagram

The article "For the perfect reach: These are the current top hashtags on Instagram" is constantly updated. Last general overhaul: March 30, 2021

Instagram has become an integral part of the social media cosmos - just like hashtags. The currently most popular network gathers more than a billion users worldwide: inside on its platform, half of whom are active every day. The user numbers for Germany in 2021 are not yet known. However, there are 88.5 million users in the USA alone who share their pictures and videos on Instagram. If you want to assert yourself here, you need a well-researched set of hashtags in addition to high-quality content - especially if you are still relatively early or have not yet been able to build a large community with millions of followers. In this article you will find out everything you need to know about hashtags and what is important when using them. In addition, we give you valuable pro tips on correct use and even list the current top hashtags sorted by niche.

The basics: How does it work with the hashtags on Instagram?

Hashtags are an important part of the global social media landscape. This is how the short message service Twitter started. Hashtags act as keywords on Instagram and in all other social networks. Who posts on a specific topic. can add a suitable hashtag to his content and be sure that his own post on the topic can be found more quickly. To set a hashtag, just add the hash sign in front of your keyword.

Use of hashtags: what you should always pay attention to

Instagram itself has cleared up common myths - or at least taken a public position - and highlighted three signals of relevance: interest, topicality and relationship.

But a high level of engagement also logically contributes to the fact that posts are seen as relevant: the more interactions, the more users see your post. This is very similar to the Facebook algorithm, because even there you will see posts more at the top of your timeline if they get a lot of reactions or several friends have already interacted with them. Instagram posts with at least one hashtag achieve 12.6 percent higher engagement than posts that do not use hashtags at all.

It is often recommended for Instagram to use fewer hashtags than the maximum number allowed. What is right? And which tags should I choose?

So far, we always recommend using a large number of hashtags, Instagram itself allows 30 per post. Because with every hashtag you expand your potential reach - especially since users can subscribe to hashtags, every hashtag can affect visibility. However, a study by Smart Insights has shown that the optimum number of tags used is less than ten. This is also communicated by Instagram employees in this way or in a similar way. However, our own experience so far shows that the more, the better. At least a higher number does not have a negative effect: the Instagram recommendations probably relate purely to aesthetics, while the investigation of Smart Insights ignores the relationship between hashtags and the number of followers.

Here is the recommendation to try out for yourself what works best for you. However, it is important to note that the hashtags should all be relevant and not generic. You should always ask yourself who you want to reach with your contribution. Most recently, Instagram has also started to censor a whole series of hashtags, which then lead to nothing if they are used.

First and foremost, you should make sure that your tags fit your niche and are relevant to the content shown. To give a roughly exaggerated example: If you post a picture of a bratwurst at the Christmas market, it fits thematically like #christmastime, #bratwurst or #christmas market. Tags like #fashiondaily, #veganfood or #plantbased would be inappropriate here.

It used to be said that the tags had to be strategically selected in order to have a chance of landing with them in the 9 top posts on the hashtag pages and thus on the presentation plate. Because the posts that were able to achieve the highest level of engagement for the respective hashtag were placed there.

Today the top posts (“Popular”) are individualized and dependent on relevance. If your post generates a high interaction rate in a short period of time, it will appear higher up on the hashtag page and thus achieve a corresponding range. However, you should refrain from hashtags with a seven-digit number of posts if you want to make it high up on the corresponding page. Incidentally, the current design of the hashtag pages looks a lot more sorted than before:

Why are hashtags with millions of posts not recommended? Aren't they much better suited for a long range?

It is true that hashtags with millions of posts are very popular. In order to end up high in the popular category, however, a post must have a high interaction rate within a short period of time - this is most likely to succeed in accounts with a very high number of followers. And even then, the popularity does not last long, because every second new posts containing this day are posted - the rotation is correspondingly high. In order to generate a high reach, you should therefore try to land in the popular images with less popular hashtags. Here the length of stay in this section is also longer, therefore more users see it: inside. In addition, it may be that you may achieve greater success with large, generic hashtags. However, these are fleeting in nature, because the target group you reach is not necessarily interested in your content. Therefore, it is better to use targeted hashtags.

If you are at the very beginning of your efforts and do not have too many followers yet, you should not fall back on the most popular hashtags with millions of posts. Rather, choose ones that have posts in the high five and low six-digit range. As the number of followers grows, your chosen hashtags can become more popular. A healthy mix of the two versions mentioned is also possible and may even be more successful. Here, too, it is important to try out and explore, because Instagram is ultimately very dynamic, which is why there is no general recipe for success.

Since the introduction of the algorithm, everything is no longer just about hashtags, your newsfeed is no longer chronological, but sorted by relevance. So the rules of the game have changed. Your content will become relevant if it succeeds in generating high interaction rates within a very short time after publication - we currently speak of a frame of between ten and 15 minutes. However, this is a (albeit plausible) rumor. What is certain is that engagement actually has an impact on your visibility in the feed.

Types and formats of hashtags on Instagram

species

There are basically two different types of hashtags: branded and community hashtags. Branded hashtags are brought into circulation by brands, for example in connection with current campaigns or events. They are a great way to generate UGC and sometimes generate a great social buzz.

Community hashtags however, do not belong to any brand, but are much more dedicated to specific (niche) topics. And this is where relevance comes into play: For example, while the generic # follow4follow with a volume of no less than 298 million posts (as of 02/21) completely misses its target, #welovehamburg is one of them despite the over 280,000 Posts still reasonably relevant and also more specific.

There are now a lot of communities with specific hashtags that you should definitely include. Would you like a small example from a local company?

It is actually not nonsensical to use a number of special tags. But what should also not be ignored is - and we cannot emphasize this often enough - that the images have to be of high quality. Just as it is not done with exclusively generic tags, the images must not be generic and boring either. Because even the best hashtags do not lead to a desirable commitment. Regular hashtag research and updating of your own set is also essential.

Furthermore, it should not go unmentioned that you should also get involved within your targeted community. As a reminder: Instagram is the network of interactions and these are by definition two-sided.

Format: hashtags to follow

The possibility of following hashtags that are relevant to you may not have fully opened up to one or the other. But we think it makes a lot of sense, because you don't have to scroll through the feed forever to find content that you want to interact with yourself (keyword: give and take), but it is automatically flushed through.

The disadvantage: users can hide your content via the CTA "Do not show for this hashtag". If several users do this at the same time: inside with your hashtag content, it could happen that it is generally no longer displayed under the hashtag. We think it's always worth the danger. Because users can hide others who they (have to) follow but do not want to see their content anyway without unfollowing them. The signal should be the same. The fact that you should make sure that your posts are of high quality is nothing new. Either way, following hashtags is a great option for increased engagement.

Butter with the fish: Many rely on bots because it is so much easier to get a significant number of followers in a short period of time. How about that?

A little excursion into a tiresome topic that only marginally has to do with hashtags: Unfortunately, despite all (supposed) efforts, Instagram is still bot-infested. The use of automation apps is a widespread problem and will - as anyone can imagine - have a long-term effect on the quality of the platform. The advantage of the apps is obvious: Without investing a lot of time and passion, users can easily get a lot of followers. But the calculation does not work out in several ways:

  1. Due to the many negative headlines from influencers in the past year, the average user can now see at first glance whether an account is doing the right thing.
  2. Since Instagram cannot keep an eye on all unwanted apps at all times, the network has now found a simple solution: users who use a third-party app that accesses the account may be punished with a lower range or temporarily blocked (for Corporate accounts can get very annoying). And the platform doesn't care whether the app is used to automate interactions or hashtag research. For this reason, apps like Tag O’Matic are unfortunately currently not recommended. Only official partners such as Hootsuite or Later can be used safely.
  3. The “Follower” KPI is completely out of date and most companies have now also realized that. What is the point of 400,000 followers if only a small fraction of them are really interested in the content? Therefore, the trend is towards micro influencers, who do not have a massive number of followers, but who show strong interest and generate high interaction rates.

Although Instagram has now taken a number of third-party apps like Instagress from the market, there are still more than enough of these types in existence and new ones are springing up like mushrooms every day. The use is not only nonsensical, but also annoying for the recipients of automated comments or follow-ups. We also advise against using appropriate service providers who promise to "make your account big" within a very short time - the offer is usually dubious.

If you continue to receive spam comments, you should rigorously report them, delete them and block the user. Unfortunately, a lot of manual work is still necessary here.

Which hashtags do you get a lot of likes on?

If you use the right Hasthags on Instagram, you can increase your reach and visibility in the app enormously - and that usually brings a lot of likes. We have put together a list of the current top hashtags for you.

List of current top hashtags on Instagram

In our list of the current top hashtags, we have focused on a maximum of six-digit to a very low seven-digit number of posts. You can almost always use them. But you have to be careful here, because in a short time they can be just as overused as #nofilter, #love or #friends - and thus become useless. Danger: The hashtag list only shows examples and can only serve as a basis and inspiration. Everyone has to do a little research for their own individual needs. Further down in the article you will find further up-to-date information on researching and using the hashtags.

Tips on hashtag research

The tags mentioned represent only a small part of the population. As already described above, you should try yourself here to find your individual path. Different hashtags work sometimes more, sometimes less well for each account. Sometimes it is enough to choose the plural instead of the singular to see a clear difference.

You can get even more inspiration from highly interactive posts in your niche. If these were previously in the top 9 hashtag pages, this is no longer the case due to the personalized arrangement. Our tip: Find some feature accounts from your niche. Feature accounts share great photos from notable photographers. Although they rarely use hashtags, the photographers themselves often still do so.

Another way to research relevant hashtags is to search. If you enter a specific day here, other popular and related hashtags will be suggested to you above:

Now, a few useful hacks to keep in mind when using hashtags on Instagram

We have now learned that hashtags no longer serve the same function as they once did. In the past you were largely responsible for the reach of the content on smaller accounts, today it is a combination of several factors.

# 1 Small and medium-sized accounts should definitely use hashtags

Don't be confused by the numerous sources that claim that fewer hashtags are more. Smaller accounts in particular limit their reach immensely, heed the tips of the experts. Why not reach a few more users for free?

# 2 hide hashtags in the comments or not?

While this used to be the insider tip for more aesthetics in the posts, today it is relatively irrelevant whether the hashtags are placed in the caption or in the comments. Some believe Instagram will cut its reach if the tags are hidden in the comments, but no one has yet been able to confirm this.

# 3 hashtag hack to save time

And so that you don't have to laboriously type in every single hashtag, we have a hack that will make your work a lot easier in the future: Save time with the Instagram hashtag hack. But be careful: You should save several keywords with different sets, as the same hashtags can also have a negative effect on the reach.

# 4 mark accounts

Lately it has become established to mark other, related accounts on the pictures in order to generate more attention. The idea is good and often works, but it should not be overused. The linked accounts should be well chosen (such as feature accounts), because now more and more users are annoyed by the method - and block those who constantly mark them without being asked.

# 5 Instagram pods

Beloved by users, the meaning behind it should always be questioned. The fact that the algorithm sorts according to relevance (including engagement) has resulted in users being forced to join forces in messenger groups and thus create artificial engagement among each other. However, Instagram is well on the way to tracking such activities and punishing users with lower reach. Facebook has already started deleting large engagement groups on the platform. So you should ask yourself if pods are the way to go.
