Where do I not and not use

The negation

"Of Nothing comes Nothing.“
(Expression)

The negation with Not

The negation of a sentence or part of a sentence is Not.

Example: negation with Not
Peter smokes. - His wife smokes Not.
Peter comes from Stuttgart. - His wife is coming Not from Stuttgart.

The negation with no

Nouns with the indefinite article or without an article ("null article") are an exception. They will with no denied.

Example: indefinite article
Peter buys a sweater. - I buy no sweater.

Examples: noun without article
Peter buys Books. - I buy no books.
Peter has money. - I have no money.

Exception: negation of the indefinite article

The negation of the indefinite article with Not is only possible if one uses the indefinite article also as the numeral one can understand.

Example:
I have not one Euros in your pocket. (= I have none Euros in your pocket.)

The position of not

The position of Not in the sentence depends on the stress.

Unstressed positions

At the end of the sentence

If the negation is not emphasized, stands Not with additions of time or persons and things in the accusative or dative at the end of the sentence.

Examples: unstressed negation - negation at the end of a sentence
Time: I'm coming not tomorrow.
Accusative: I visit not my brother.
Dative: I help not my sistert.

This does not change if there are several additions to the sentence.

Examples
Time: I'm coming tomorrow because of an important appointment Not.
Accusative: I visit my brother on holiday Not.
Dative: I help my sister on the weekend Not.

Before certain additions

In the case of unstressed negation of fixed prepositional additions (verbs with prepositions), sein + adjective, place additions and adverbs are used Not right before these supplements.

Examples: unstressed negation - negation before the following additions
Verb + fixed preposition: I'm waiting Not on the train. (waiting for)
his + adjective: I am Not athletic.
Location: I'm driving Not to Berlin.
Adverb: I sing Not Well.

This does not change if there are several additions to the sentence.

Examples:
Verb + fixed preposition: I. wait not on the train here with my friends.
his + adjective: I. am always because of my health problems not very sporty.
Location: I'm going with my girlfriend tomorrow because of the bad weather not to Berlin.
Adverb: I sing because of my cold not good.

Stressed positions

All other positions from Not are stressed positions that require correction rather require.

Example: stressed negation
Time: I'm not coming tomorrow, but on the weekend.
Accusative: I am not visiting my brother, but my sister.
Dative: I don't help my sister, but my father.
modal addition: I don't drive with my sister, but with my father.

In the case of longer sentences, the negated addition must then be moved towards the end of the sentence immediately in front of the sentence brackets.

Example: temporal addition
unstressed: I'm not going to Berlin with my girlfriend tomorrow because of the bad weather.
emphasizes: I'm not going to Berlin with my girlfriend tomorrow because of the bad weather, but on Friday.

Example: modal addition
unstressed: I'm not going to Berlin with my girlfriend tomorrow because of the bad weather.
emphasizes: I am not going to Berlin with my girlfriend tomorrow because of the bad weather, but alone.

The difference between not and nothing

Nothing is the negation of something. If something is a mandatory addition - that is, if the sentence is without something is incomplete - the negation is always Nothing.

Example: something = mandatory
something nothing
Did you buy something in town yesterday? - No, I didn't find anything.
(buy + accusative) - (find + accusative)

If something is not a mandatory addition, the negation is Nothing o d e r Not.

Example: something = not mandatory
something - nothing / not
Do you have the lottery (something) won? - No, I have Nothing won./ No, I have Not won.
