How much does WordPress hosting cost in HostGator
Hostgator Inc. was founded in 2002 by Brent Oxley in his dormitory. The web company grew over the years from a one-man operation to one with hundreds of employees. and was ranked 21st (2008) and 239th (2009) in Inc. 5000 Fastest Growing Company.
In 2012, Brent sold the company to Endurance International Group (EIG) for an unofficial $ 225 million.
EIG, which also owns a number of other well-known web hosting brands including BlueHost, iPage, FatCow, HostMonster, Pow Web, Easy CGI, Arvixe, eHost, A Small Orange and so on; is now the largest website hosting company.
My 12 years of experience with Hostgator
This Hostgator review was first published in 2008 - more than a decade ago.
Hostgator, the company, has gone through a number of big changes - Brent sold his company to Endurance International Group (EIG) in 2012. The new owner released a new Hostgator.com website design, reinvented themselves as a cloud hosting provider, and added a new drag-and-drop site builder, the Gator Website Builder, in 2019.
As a long-standing Hostgator customer, I have seen the company go up and down.
WHSR was previously hosted at Hostgator!
WHSR (this website you are reading right now) was hosted at Hostgator once before switching to cloud-based hosting, WP-Engine in 2011, and InMotion Hosting two years later.
In March 2017, I bought a new Hostgator cloud hosting plan and started monitoring server performance. I am currently running some side projects including Dsgn x Dvlp which I am using to run hosting tests on this cloud hosting account.
What's in this Hostgator Review
This test gives you an insight into Hostgator hosting as well as years of statistics on server performance. Let's dive in!

Hostgator Review: What We Like
1. Solid server performance (uptime> 99.99%)
Server availability is the only thing that I emphasized very much in my hosting reviews. Can you imagine what will happen to your business if your website goes down frequently? Extraordinary additional functions are of no importance unless your website stays online.
Since I have owned both Hostgator Shared Hosting and Cloud Hosting in the past, I will give you the availability record for both plans.
HostGator Uptime (2020)
Past record (2013 - 2019)

2. Hostgator Cloud Hosting = speed
I ran several tests on Hostgator Cloud Hosting using Bitcatch and WebpageTest.
The results have been great.
Here are some speed test results I got for different test locations. Note the server response times for test nodes in the US - the results (under 50 ms) were excellent.

4. Free site migration for new customers
Hostgator offers a limited number of free transfers from other web hosting companies to new users.
For cloud plans, you are entitled to a full transfer within 30 days of signing up.
5. Good customer support policy
Free SSL installation
In connection with the Google Chrome browser, shared SSL is automatically installed on every domain for Hostgator customers.
Enabling SSL will give your domain the "HTTPS: //" prefix, which will ensure that your website will be marked as "secure" in most web browsers.
Hostgator availability guarantee
The company guarantees a server availability of 99.9% and will refund your money if the availability is insufficient. Read Hostgator's hosts (section 15).
If your shared or reseller server experiences physical downtime that does not meet the 99.9% availability guarantee, you may receive one month (1) into your account.
This availability guarantee does not apply to planned maintenance work. Approval of a loan is at HostGator's sole discretion and may depend on the justification provided. […] To request a loan, please visit http://support.hostgator.com to create a support ticket for our billing department with a reason.
Hostgator supports various channels: 24-hour live chat, telephone, forums, ticketing system and Twitter.
For those who don't like to wait and would like to solve the problem themselves - the company also has an extensive knowledge base on customer support.
While not everyone is happy with their after-sales service, at least Hostgator takes care of their customers.
Hostgator Support on Twitter
Hostgator support is provided through a variety of channels including Twitter.
45 day money back guarantee
Most web hosting companies offer a standard 30 day money back guarantee to their first time customers.
HostGator is one of the few that extend the trial period up to the 45 days and give you an additional 15 days to try out their offers risk-free.
Hostgator user forum
A forum (which allows its customers to speak freely) is usually a positive indication of the company's willingness to hear feedback and ratings from its customers and to continuously improve.
You can visit the Hostgator forum here.
6. Hostgator = Favorite web hosting service for bloggers?
In 2015, I spoke to a group of ~ 50 bloggers and asked for their comment on their blog hosting services. The survey mentioned 43 votes and 21 hosting brands.
Hostgator was the name mentioned most often (7 times) in the survey.
The same thing happened in 2016. The size of the survey was 200 times larger with ~ 4 respondents. Of the ~ 200 responses I've received, 30 are hosting their primary site on Hostgator.
Hostgator users are generally happy with their host
After two major server outages in 2013 and 2014, I didn't expect so many bloggers to stick with Hostgator hosting. Some survey respondents I spoke to complained about the long wait on live chat, but in general most of them are happy with their host.
Enstine Muki, EnstineMuki.com
“With them [Hostgator] since 2008 and haven't had any major problems.
The live support is the worst on Hostgator. Getting help via email or live chat is getting harder and harder. It looks like it's the worst in the business right now. "

Abrar Mohi Shafee, Blogging Magic (Blog Sold)
“People may have noticed that HostGator has gotten really slow on live support. It used to be 2-3 minutes, now it takes 30 minutes or more.
Just for clarification, I think this is the consequence of the data center as the owner has changed. While I should let you know, HostGator was the company that provided the fastest live support ever. Existing customers are considering deviating from where new customers think they will be pinched if they drag themselves into it. But I think we should give them a chance as they are gradually being overcome. The company has been the jewel in web hosting for the past few years. There must be a hard reason for all of these difficulties. But that never means they are a bad host. "

- Anthony Zazo (@azazo) June 8, 2014
@Antonkudin Well, I usually recommend Hostgator, although this usually goes for WordPress. Even so, it's good for what you need

The Cons: What's not great about Hostgator
1. Hostgator "unlimited" hosting is limited
In reality, all unlimited hosting plans are restricted by a long list of server usage restrictions.
Hostgator - as a for-profit company is no exception in this edition - excessive use of the Hostgator server can result in account suspension or termination.
If you read the company's Acceptable Use Policy -
C / a. i) [You must not] Use at least twenty-five percent (25%) of our system resources for more than ninety (90) seconds. Activities that can cause this overuse include but are not limited to: CGI scripts, FTP, PHP, HTTP, etc.
C / b. Using more than two hundred and fifty thousand (250,000) inodes on a shared or reseller account may result in a warning. If no measures are taken to reduce the excessive use of inodes, your account may be suspended. If an account exceeds one hundred thousand (100,000) inodes it will be automatically removed from our backup system to avoid overuse. However, databases are backed up at our sole discretion as a courtesy.
2. Expensive renewal fees
Like many other cheap hosting service providers, Hostgator will increase the price as soon as your bill is ready to be renewed.
Here is the renewal price for Hostgator cloud hosting plans.
|Hostgator plans||Renewal (36-mo)|
* Note: All registration prices are based on the current Hostgator discount (January 2021) https://www.hostgator.com at the latest offer price.
** Also - To see this in context, also check out our market study on web hosting costs.
3. Occasionally long wait for live chat support
In 2017 I looked into the live chat support of 28 hosting companies and recorded my experience in a table.
The Hostgator live chat support performance was what I expected in this case study. The average waiting time was 4 minutes and my problems were resolved efficiently.
However, there was a time when I had to wait 15 to 20 minutes to reach live chat support - which I find rather unsatisfactory. Customers with great live chat support may want to try others (SiteGround has the best live chat support in my experience so far. Go check out).
4. Server location in USA only
Hostgator servers are located in the US only. For advanced users, you'll need a content delivery network (CDN) to reduce latency.

Gator Website Builder
Website Builder has become a major trend in the hosting industry. In 2019 Hostgator reinvented the Website Builder and launched the Gator Website Builder.
For just $ 3.84 / month, you can now design (using one of 200 pre-made website templates), build (using the drag and drop web editor) and host websites at Hostgator.

|Registration price (24 months) **||$ 3.84 / mo||$ 5.99 / mo||$ 9.22 / mo|
* The Gator Express Store plan (sign up at $ 9.22 / month, renew at $ 18.45 / month) is relatively cheaper when compared to other similar online shop / website builder plans.
** The prices quoted are reduced prices with our voucher code (55% discount) "WHSRBUILD".
Verdict: Is Hostgator Right?
We typically choose a web host based on a few key factors: company reputation, reasonable price, features, and server performance.
From the test results and studies shown above, you can determine that Hostgator Cloud Hosting lives up to expectations across all categories. The company received 4.5 stars in our updated review (we use an 80-point checklist for our reviews). Learn how it works here).
So yeah - Hostgator is a breeze. And personally, I think the Gator is a particularly good choice for newbies and individual bloggers who want to “stick with the crowd”.
