Donald Trump could be charged with high treason

If one were to lean towards sarcasm, one would now have to realize that Donald Trump is slowly running out of opportunities to lose the 2020 presidential election. He lost for the first time on election day. He lost dozens of times in the weeks that followed, when courts across the country dismissed the sometimes hair-raising lawsuits his lawyers filed against the election results; and when in several important states even his Republican party friends refused to participate in his undemocratic maneuvers. He lost again last Friday when the Washington Supreme Court justices rejected one of these bizarre lawsuits, coolly letting Trump know that they were not going to help him steal Joe Biden's election victory.

And on Monday Trump lost again. The members of the Electoral College came together in the individual states. The US Constitution gives these electors the task of electing the President of the United States. They did, and they elected Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. as future president and Kamala Devi Harris as future vice president by 306 votes to 232. "Democracy won," said Biden in a speech after the vote.

Donald Trump can tweet as much as he wants - it's over. There is no longer any legal way for him to prevent Biden from being sworn in on January 20, 2021. A few people around him urge him to use illegal means. The president should proclaim martial law and have the election repeated, urges former General Michael Flynn, who served Trump as National Security Advisor for a few days in 2017.

You can never rule out anything with Trump, and you have to expect the worst with him. But here's a prediction: If he does that, it won't end with a second term, but with a charge of high treason.

Trump has driven American society to the brink of madness

Trump has expected a lot from his country. His presidency was a brutal four-year ego trip that cost America and the Americans a high price. Quite a few have literally paid with their lives for this - Trump leaves the USA with the terrible record of more than 300,000 corona deaths.

Trump has driven American society to the brink of insanity and the institutions on which American democracy rests to the brink of collapse. His attempt to undermine the outcome of a free, fair election is unprecedented in recent US history. It is almost a miracle that America's institutions have survived the presidential attacks halfway. Whether this also applies to America's society remains to be seen.

Trump would now have the chance to let it be good. He might admit his defeat to himself in the Air Force One Fly to Florida and play golf in Mar-a-Lago in the future. That would be best for the US and its compatriots. But it would also be selfless, patriotic and democratic. So don't bet that Trump will do it.

In the end it has to be like this: On January 20, 2021 Joe Biden will be sworn in as the 46th President of the USA. And if Trump really wants it that way, he will bargain for a defeat that day. Nobody can prevent him from losing the 2020 presidential election one last time.
