The grape varieties initially differ in color: table grapes can be dark blue, reddish, yellowish or light green. The flesh of the dark varieties tastes sweeter and more aromatic, while the light ones contain more acid and have a more pronounced nutmeg note. The color is almost always only in the skin, the inside of the fruit is usually light. Scientists assume that originally there were only dark varieties and that the light ones go back to an early genetic mutation.

Kernels contain valuable ingredients

All grape varieties naturally have seeds. Through breeding it was possible to obtain seedless fruits. Many consumers prefer light-colored grape varieties without seeds. For example, the varieties Regal Seedless, Thompson Seedless and Seedless Sugaro are widespread. Nutrition experts recommend varieties with seeds like Regina or Italia because they contain valuable ingredients. When eating, you should chew the kernels so that the body can utilize these substances and the kernels do not excrete undigested.

Less growth without kernels

In addition to the reproduction of the plant, the kernels have another important function: They release hormones that stimulate growth. Therefore, seedless grapes are either smaller or they are helped. The missing hormones, called gibberellins, are then sprayed onto the grapes.

In Europe, table grapes are in season in late summer and autumn.

However, none of the samples was above the legal maximum value.

When buying, you should pay attention to freshness: The grapes should appear crisp and firm and not be too soft. The style approaches and the stalk should also be green and fresh. If the berries are stored for a long time, the stems can turn brown and woody, and putrefaction can quickly develop at the base of the berries. A white veil on many grapes is called a scent film, is a sign of freshness and protects the fruit from drying out. Since grapes do not ripen, only buy tasty fruits. They stay fresh in the refrigerator for about a week. Before eating, the grapes should be washed thoroughly.

Enjoy fresh or cooked

Fresh grapes taste best raw as a snack, in fruit salads or muesli. They are also popular as a snack in combination with hearty dishes such as cheese or as a decoration on cold plates. When cooked, grapes give stewed poultry, sauerkraut or vegetables a sweet note.

Dried grapes are sold as raisins, sultanas or currants. Raisins is the generic term for the sweet, dried fruits. Sultanas come from the seedless grape variety Sultana and taste particularly sweet. The dark currants are obtained from the Korinthiaki grape variety.
