Energy advice and promotion for companies

Federal funding for energy advice in medium-sized companies

Before investing in new technologies or company buildings, we recommend an energy consultancy funded by the Federal Ministry of Economics with specific suggestions for economically viable measures to increase energy efficiency. The BMWi pays a grant of 80 percent of the consulting costs, but not more than 6,000 euros. For small companies with less than 10,000 euros in energy costs, the maximum subsidy is 1,200 euros.

The current funding guidelines of the "Federal funding for energy advice in medium-sized companies" can be found here.

You can find a qualified energy advisor near you in the list of energy efficiency experts for federal funding programs at www-energie-ektiven-experten.de.

SME initiative energy transition and climate protection

The restructuring of the energy supply in the course of the energy transition poses major challenges for small and medium-sized companies in Germany, but also opens up new opportunities for them. The energy transition and climate protection initiative, supported by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety, the German Chamber of Industry and Commerce and the Central Association of German Crafts, aims to support German SMEs in implementing the energy transition.

Due to its success, the energy transition and climate protection initiative will be continued in the years to come. You can find more information about the organization of the initiative here.

Federal funding for energy efficiency in the economy

With the “Federal funding for energy efficiency in the economy” program, which came into force on January 1, 2019, the BMWi offers support for companies, freelancers and municipal companies that invest in new, energy-efficient technologies. In order to take into account the different financing needs of companies, companies have the choice between a grant, which you can apply for at the Federal Office of Economics and Export Control (BAFA), and a low-interest loan with partial debt relief (repayment grant), which is granted by KfW. You can find an overview of the funding program here.

Module 1: Cross-sectional technologies
Cross-sectional technologies are used in a wide variety of ways in a wide variety of industries. Conveyor systems need compressed air, ventilation systems cool machines, pumps keep industrial production running. A lot of energy is consumed and too often wasted. There are numerous tried and tested, energy-efficient alternatives, particularly when it comes to cross-sectional technologies. In order to promote the spread of these technologies, the BMWi supports investments in replacing or purchasing new highly efficient systems and units for industrial and commercial use with 30 percent of the eligible costs. Small and medium-sized companies receive a 40 percent grant.

Module 2: Process heat from renewable energies
Renewable energies are already suitable for providing the necessary process heat in many industries and application areas. In order to support companies in switching to renewable sources and to promote the use of renewable process heat, the BMWi supports the provision of process heat from solar thermal systems, efficient heat pumps and biomass systems. The integration of renewable energy sources into the production process is funded with 40 percent of the eligible costs. Small and medium-sized businesses receive 55 percent funding.

Module 3: Measurement, control and regulation technology
Energy management systems are effective tools for increasing energy efficiency in companies. To do this, the energy flows must be systematically recorded and controlled - and this requires the appropriate hardware and software. That is why the BMWi supports the acquisition and installation of measurement, control and regulation technology as well as sensors for integration into an energy or environmental management system with 30 percent of the eligible costs. Small and medium-sized companies receive a grant of 40 percent. The energy management software and the training of employees in handling the software are also promoted.

Module 4: Energy-related optimization of systems and processes
Whether in mechanical engineering, in the printing industry or in the supermarket: those who use a lot of energy can save a lot. In order to utilize all potential savings, the BMWi promotes company-specific, more complex, i.e. efficiency measures related to the entire production process. A wide variety of efficiency measures can be combined. It is important that the energy consumption and thus also the CO2 emissions decrease - and companies demonstrate this in a savings concept. Companies receive funding of up to 30 for the energy-related optimization of industrial and commercial systems and processes, which leads to a reduction in energy consumption Percent of the eligible costs (maximum 500 euros per ton of CO2 saved). Small and medium-sized companies receive funding of up to 40 percent (a maximum of 700 euros per ton of CO2 saved.

Federal funding for energy efficiency in the economy - funding competition
In addition to the classic subsidy to increase energy efficiency in companies, the program “Federal Promotion for Energy Efficiency in Business - Promotion Competition” (follow-up program to “STEP Up!”) Is intended to offer competitive promotion with a flexible, higher funding rate. The funding decision is based on the so-called funding efficiency, i.e. the higher the energy savings compared to the funding amount, the better the chances are in the competition for funding. The start date and the conditions for the BMWi energy efficiency funding competition will be announced in spring 2019.
