How to feed a Sulcata tortoise

It has been proven that the only correct food as the main food for European tortoises consists of wild plants or wild herbs (also called weeds).
Everything that is not poisonous and is found on our meadows can be offered.

The important thing is the variety of forage plants.

Hay or hay pellets as well as sepia bowl (squid fish school for lime supply) should also always be offered.

Natural meadow with various herbs

Fine jet

Turtles like to eat hairy leaves.
Often found on the edge of the forest, white flowers.

Plantain

Well-suited feed which can be found on all natural meadows.
Do not pick near roads (exhaust fumes)

Ribwort plantain

Well-suited feed which can be found on all natural meadows.

dandelion

Favorite food for turtles, but watch out, very high in protein,
therefore please only feed in moderation

clover

Can be found on nutrient-rich meadows.
very high in protein, so please only feed in moderation

Hay or agrobs

If you cannot / do not want to dry herbs and grass yourself, you have the alternative AGROBS hay pellets (only these are suitable!) to fall back on.
These hay pellets consist (as the name suggests) only of meadow hay from the foothills of the Alps. Order option:

It is usually eaten with pleasure (preferred to hay) and consists of cocklegrass, meadow foxtail, meadow swallow, dandelion, smooth oat, honeydew grass, lady's mantle, ribwort, vetch, timothy, comb grass, golden oat, meadow panicle, swedish clover, yarrow, pennon herb many other herbs.

Appropriate feeding is still the biggest problem.
It is still said that the turtle can be satisfied with salad, fruits and vegetables without any problems.

But that is absolutely wrong!

Most of the turtles come from steppe-like regions that are only very sparsely green, especially during the summer months.
Above all, shrubs (Maggia) and otherwise very sparse low grasses grow here.

How often and how much should the animals be fed?

This is often where the greatest difficulty arises, as Mediterranean tortoises get by on about 1/7 of the amount of food that a mammal needs. Accordingly, you are allowed to bring your turtles do not overfeedwhich unfortunately many owners do unconsciously. The consequence of too good feeding is first and foremost a lot too rapid growth as Bone and organ problems (rickets)which subsequently harm the animal (often permanently).
We feed our animals as follows and were able to determine slow, natural growth:
Fresh every day and available all day: meadow hay or agrobs
Every other day divided over two servings (morning and afternoon): Fresh wild herbs
The size of a portion naturally depends on the number of animals - as a rule of thumb, however, the animals should get as much as they can eat within 15 minutes.
Water must also be offered to the animals for free consumption at all times and everywhere!

Absolutely unsuitable food

Ready-made feed, feed sticks, pellets
contain too much protein (Much too fast growth)and causes organ and skeletal damage.
Cereal products
these destroy the healthy intestinal flora, which can lead to parasite infestation.
fruit
also destroys the healthy intestinal flora.
Meat products
lead to explosive growth due to the animal proteins, which leads to irreversible damage.
Vitamin products
These are superfluous with proper nutrition.
