Add a drawing to a document

There are basic types of graphics that you can use to spice up your Word documents: drawing objects, SmartArt, charts, pictures, and clip art objects. The term "drawings" refers to a drawing object or group of drawing objects.

Drawing objects include shapes, diagrams, flowcharts, curves, lines, and WordArt. These objects are part of your Word document. You can change these objects with colors, patterns, frames and other effects and make them more attractive.

Note: It is no longer necessary to insert a drawing area to work with drawing objects in Word. However, you might want to use a drawing area as an organizer when working with multiple drawing objects or adding connectors between shapes. To insert a drawing area, click the tab Insert on to shapeand then on New drawing area.
