The Dow Jones Industrial Average Index, benchmark index for US industry
In order to track the development of the American financial markets and the American economy, the shares of 30 large publicly traded companies that are listed on the NYSE or NASDAQ are combined to form the Dow Jones Industrial Average Index - DJIA for short - and commonly referred to as the Dow Jones. or more simply the DOW.
The DOW Index is created by adding the price of a stock for each component company (with some correction factors) and is widely considered to be the benchmark index for industrial activity in the United States. However, because the DOW is not weighted by market capitalization and only includes 30 companies that are not exactly the 30 largest American companies, the S&P 500 index is generally considered to be the more representative index of the US stock market. and the wider economy.
