WIESBADEN - The inflation rate in Germany - measured as the change in the consumer price index (CPI) compared to the same month last year - was + 2.0% in April 2021. Thus, the inflation rate increased for the fourth month in a row after the end of the temporary lowering of VAT rates. It last reached this level in April 2019. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), consumer prices rose by 0.7% compared to March 2021.

Energy rose above average by 7.9% within the year

The prices for goods as a whole increased by 2.6% from April 2020 to April 2021. The prices for energy products were 7.9% higher than a year earlier, after + 4.8% in March 2021. In addition to the CO introduced at the beginning of the year, this had an impact2-Duty also the price decline for energy products a year ago on the inflation rates (base effect). Fuel (+23.3%) and heating oil (+21.1%) in particular became more expensive within the year, while electricity prices fell slightly (-0.2%). Food prices rose by 1.9%. Services rose in price by 1.6% within a year

The prices for services as a whole were 1.6% above the level of the same month of the previous year in April 2021. Net rents, which are significant due to the large share of consumer spending by private households, rose by 1.3%. The prices rose more significantly, among other things, for hairdressing and body care services (+6.1%), for services by social institutions (+5.9%) and for financial services (+5.6%). In contrast, telecommunications services, for example, were cheaper (-1.0%).

Noticeable price increase compared to the previous month for fresh vegetables with + 9.0%

Compared to March 2021, the consumer price index rose by 0.7%. The rising food prices are noteworthy (+1.3%). Consumers had to pay more for fresh vegetables than in the previous month (+ 9.0%). In contrast, the prices for energy products fell slightly (-0.1%), in particular light heating oil became cheaper (-2.2%).

Methodological notes:
In April 2021, the current corona crisis again led to difficulties in collecting prices because some goods were not available on the market. Information on the effects of the lockdown on price collection can be found in our method paper. The quality of the results of the consumer price statistics is still guaranteed.

The difference between the CPI and the HICP for Germany is mainly due to different update times of the goods weights, see method paper.

In addition to other indicators for classifying the economic consequences of the corona pandemic, the results of the consumer price index are also available on the special page Corona statistics on the website of the Federal Statistical Office.

Crisis monitor enables comparison between corona crisis and financial and economic crisis

The consumer price index is also part of the crisis monitor (www.destatis.de/krisenmonitor), with which the Federal Statistical Office compares the development of important economic indicators in the corona crisis and in the financial and economic crisis of 2008/2009. The crisis monitor supplements the special page Corona statistics (www.destatis.de/corona), which bundles statistical information on the economic and social consequences of the corona pandemic.
