Letters of recommendation for a scholarship: what belongs in it?
Those who apply for a scholarship are often asked to include letters of recommendation. Typically, these reports come from people who can assess the applicant well - such as professors, teachers or superiors. Those who are asked to write such a recommendation are often happy to comply with this request if they think highly of the applicant. For many, however, it is unclear what the typical content of a letter of recommendation is.
In the letter of recommendation, on the one hand, the relationship to the applicant should be explained so that the foundation can classify the relationship - and the meaningfulness of the recommendation. On the other hand, the recommendation deals with the applicant's professional skills and performance. Additional qualifications such as stays abroad or internships can also be mentioned. Personal characteristics and strengths should also be mentioned in such an opinion.
Depending on the foundation to which the applicant is applying for a scholarship, certain specific aspects should also be mentioned. This can include, for example, social engagement or engagement with a church organization. What makes sense in terms of content also depends on what exactly the scholarship is for. When it comes to funding for research, for example, the idea should be presented and evaluated. The applicant should be presented as qualified and competent - and thus as capable of successfully carrying out the study in question.
A letter of recommendation includes expressly recommending the applicant as a scholarship holder. To underpin this stance, words like “unconditionally”, “unreservedly” or “emphatically” can be used.
How is a letter of recommendation for a scholarship structured?
When writing a letter of recommendation, you should keep the typical structure in mind. Basically, it is similar in structure to a cover letter. However, it is usually a little longer than a cover letter and goes into greater depth. Mostly it is one A4 page long.
In the upper area of the page you will find the contact details - first that of the sender including a telephone number and, if necessary, an e-mail address, then that of the recipient.
After a few paragraphs, the place and date are right-aligned. As with the cover letter, the letter of recommendation also has a subject line. Here you should make it clear what it is about, for example "Letter of recommendation for Ms. Muster" or "Recommendation for Mr. Mustermann".
The personal address is followed by an introduction in which you explain how you know the applicant from. How do you relate to each other? Do you only know each other briefly or have you known each other for a while?
The main part is about describing the applicant's professional qualifications. How did you experience him? What is he particularly good at, what are his strengths? A clear description with examples is lively and easy to understand. Also describe the candidate's personality traits. Point out characteristics that on the one hand particularly caught your eye, but on the other hand are also particularly beneficial for the application for the scholarship. Do not judge the applicant too soberly, but rather calmly and emotionally.
Finally, an explicit recommendation for the applicant to be taken into account when awarding the scholarship should not be missing. This is how you underpin the good assessment. Also show yourself open to being contacted by the foundation if you have any questions. After the greeting you should personally sign the letter of recommendation.
