An indirect way to determine the health of the VVTI is to remove the connector from the VVTI valve while the engine is idling. If the revolutions have not changed, the VVTI will not work. If they changed, it can work.

We take out the filter. It consists of a net in a plastic housing that is inserted into a metal bolt and removed together. Sometimes (as they say) the mesh stays in the hole, then you remove it from there with tweezers. So we had this filter (view from both sides).

The VVT-I system (hereinafter referred to as VVTI) has long been present on all Toyota engines. The essential thing is to shift the valve control so that it delivers maximum power over the entire speed range. With the VVTI operating properly at the lower and upper levels, the motor will produce more power than the same motor with the disconnected / faulty VVTI.
This IWTI is very important. half so that if some machines malfunction, the brakes disappear. and some throttle spontaneously and try to crash into the wall.
For Prius, VVTI, with its Atkinson cycle, is of paramount importance in and of itself. In addition, VVTI works with constant starts / stops of the engine. Its inadequate operation results in the car no longer locking or jerking when stopping / starting.
The VVTI system consists of a VVTI valve to which the on-board computer is connected. controls the movement of the oil in the VVTI system and the sprocket on the intake camshaft, which directly changes the duration of the intake phase depending on the pressure and the direction of the oil movement in the VVTI system. A filter mesh is placed in front of the VVTI valve to prevent the valve from becoming wedged. Between these elements - of course - thin oil channels. When using bad oil or changing it prematurely, dirt from the oil settles on the filter mesh, clogs it completely, oil stops flowing into the VVTI mechanism, it freezes in the middle position, as if the car does not have a VVTI, and Prius jerks if starting / stopping, consumption increases, dynamics decrease. There may also be debris in the valve blocking it in one position. They can be located in the cavities of the IWTI star mechanism and restrict their movement. whereby the valve control is violated. All of this leads to the same tremor.
Please note that I am not claiming that this is the only reason for the St. Vitus dance at 1NZ-FXE, but one of many that should probably be devoted to a separate FAQ-style article.

For parsing we need key / head for 10, hex for 6 (bought in Avtomag for 19 rubles). I also have some sort of bit holder handle, like a screwdriver, which also helped.
To clean the paint buildup on the mesh, I used these household chemicals - Shumanit grease remover (Israel), which costs about 250 rubles per bottle. By the way, it's a terribly effective thing, it removes carbon deposits from the stoves at one point your wife will thank you for it.
Instead of Shumanit, you can use this Russian remedy, it also works well, but it costs five times less.
Interested parties can of course wash themselves with kerosene or carbcliner, but KMC, their efficiency is much lower.
With a 1 Hz engine, the filter is located on the left below the cylinder head cover, directly below the VVT-i valve.

As you can see, the filter is very dirty, even water practically did not go through it, which means that the VVTI mechanism practically did not work. By the way, an indirect way to determine the functionality of the VVTI is to remove the connector from the VVTI valve while the engine is idling. If the revolutions have not changed, then VVTI will not work. If they have changed, it can work .
In general, we put the filter in a jar, fill it with shumanite and let it stand for 20 minutes.
Then wash off the eaten away dirt with water. see the result.
As you can see, the result is already there, about 50% has been washed. We repeat the process with shumanitis for another 20-30 minutes. We rinse. The result is a 100% cleaner filter.
In the light you can see that the mesh is completely cleaned outside and inside.
Now it can be dried and replaced. Tighten it as tight as it was. Check to see if the engine is running for oil leaks. You can check it out in a day. I was fine the first time. A week later, out of curiosity, I did a check-up to see if anything was jammed. The result is perfect condition (see first photo).
The valve is also part of the VVTI, I couldn't take it out, it was stuck there firmly. because the new one costs 1,500 rubles, and the old one seems to work, then it was decided not to touch it yet. There is information on the Internet about how a motorist had to break the electromagnet off the valve and locate the valve using a special device welded from a screw to replace it with a new one. They also write that fuel oil and tar can build up in the VVTI sprocket housing, limiting the range of valve timing. I will go there another time when I buy a cylinder head gasket.
While I am thinking of washing all of the oil passages with Shell Helix Ultra Extra Oil, they write that it actually washes well. And with the help of slow rinses before the oil change, on which you can drive 100-200 km (I saw that on Liquid Molly, Laurus).
VVTI started to work. Below I noticed no change in the thrust, above a noticeable increase in performance of 10-15% (depending on the sensation). After 80 km / h the dynamics are better. The car began to travel at a speed of 90-100 km / h with a flow rate of a little less than 5 l / 100 km. It used to be more than 5 l / 100 km. It started to block (otherwise it stopped very sooner). Well, and an unexpected side effect - the shaking stopped when the start-stop was hot, it jams and starts very smoothly. In fairness it should be noted that tremors, however, very occasionally. I think that's because of candles, coils, and dirty injectors. All in good time.

Under normal operating conditions, the oil pump generates engine oil pressure to the CVVT solenoid valve. The control unit controls the VVT valve using pulse width modulation (PWM).
When the ECM needs to adjust the CVVT mechanism to the maximum opening advance angle of the intake valve, the system solenoid opens 100%. At this point, pressurized oil enters the advance chamber, the VVT rotor blades move in the opposite direction to the direction of rotation of the crankshaft and remain in the maximum advance position.
When idling, the VVT mechanism remains at an angle of approx. 8 °. And since the angle of mechanical opening of the intake valve is 5 °, the intake valve actually opens at an angle of 13 ° when idling.
Similar to the process of anticipation. The solenoid valve only opens with a maximum delay to 0%. At this point, pressurized oil enters the deceleration chamber, the VVT rotor blades move in the direction of rotation of the crankshaft and remain in the maximum deceleration position.
