What is health and fitness

The importance of fitness in society

In today's society, the terms fitness and health are receiving increasing attention. The population is encouraged by the media, health insurances and politics to get involved in their health and to use the multitude of offers. With over 9 million people exercising, fitness is the sport with the highest number of participants, ahead of football and gymnastics. If you look at the economic aspect, it can be assumed that the fitness and health market has not yet been exhausted.
With regard to the importance of fitness, a change in awareness and values has taken place in our society. It is now common knowledge that regular fitness training has numerous economic and health benefits. The trend towards fitness training continues to increase and the fitness market is benefiting from this knowledge and experiencing strong growth potential. It is assumed that this development will continue to increase over the next three decades (see Kondratiev cycles). Companies have also recognized the importance of fitness and are increasingly offering company health management (OHM) to support their employees and reduce the rate of illness among their own employees.

What is fitness?

According to Duden, fitness describes "a good physical condition due to a planned athletic training". The goal of fitness in sport is to improve or maintain the overall physical condition or to minimize the loss of performance through training. Fitness in connection with health has the goal of taking measures to prevent illnesses or to restore the functional state after illnesses or injuries.

Fitness through the ages

The fitness movement didn't emerge until the end of the 19th century. Before that, this thought of additional physical exercise was not necessary. Classic bodybuilding started in 1946 by the Weider brothers and the founding of the first international bodybuilding association (IFBB). In Germany, interest in fitness only increased through the success of Arnold Schwarzenegger between 1970 and 1980. The 80s were particularly characterized by step aerobics - so more and more women found their way into the fitness movement. In the last ten years a new fitness boom has broken out, which continues to this day.

Changes and consequences

Health awareness is growing and the work-life balance is increasingly becoming a central factor. Politics, the media and health insurance companies show a strong presence.

The fitness industry is benefiting from these changes and the fitness sport is therefore the sport with the most participants. Strong growth will continue to take place - which will further increase the need for qualified employees (according to Handel, 2006)

Fitness industry statistics

The German fitness studios have more than 9 million members. The average age of the members is around 42 years. There are a total of around 8,000 registered fitness studios in Germany, around 90% of which are for both genders and around 10% for women only. An estimated 206,000 people are employed in the studios and the turnover of all studio operations in Germany amounts to approx. 4.7 billion euros.

Membership fees account for around 4.18 billion euros (according to DSSV key data of the German fitness industry, 2016).

The fitness industry as a field of work

Job prospects for fitness trainers are very good. There are opportunities for further education, training and studies. Potential employers for fitness trainers are fitness studios, sports clubs, therapy practices, health and rehabilitation clinics, personal training studios, cruise ships, wellness and sports hotels or companies in the field of corporate health management.

The demand for qualified trainers is growing in all areas of the fitness and health industry. However, the demands on coaches have also increased. Members expect support in which individual and qualified advice is provided. The professionalization of studio staff increases the personal image of the trainer and the image of the studio. The studio can position itself excellently in the market, stand out from the competition and establish itself optimally in the long term.

Due to the increasing quality demands on trainers in the areas of training support, offer structure, customer service and flexible deployment, well-trained staff with social skills is one of the most important success factors for companies in the fitness and health industry today. Fitness trainers should meet the quality and qualification requirements of the market, as this opens up promising and attractive fields of employment.
